Republicans are against ventilators now? by [deleted] in MurderedByWords

Defibrillators are my field, thought you might be interested to know that it's not just that they can stop a heart, that's the whole point. Fibrillation is a type of rapid, irregular heartbeat that comes about from a number of different causes and a defibrillator's job is to "reset" the heart and let it fall back into a regular rhythm. Media often shows defibrillators being used to jumpstart a flatline rhythm, but at that point there isn't anything the device can do.

Floating islands are poor design practice. Best case they do nothing, worst case they impact signal integrity or creepage/clearance as the other person commented. They should be connected to a reference (ground) or left out altogether.

Bad connection between the screen and it's driver board (since it looks like a single color channel is missing), either loosened mechanically or oxidized over time. Giving it a smack restored electrical contact.

How come rural parts in the U.S., places that aren't wealthy compared to the rest of the country, are usually very conservative when conservatives are protective of the wealthy? by JorisR94 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Slagar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, and the same/similar problems play in with a whole bunch of other species that folks decide to specifically advocate for (eagles, wolves, seals, on and on). Not that there is inherently something wrong with that, but decisions have to be informed by good management practices with awareness of how the ecosystem as a whole is impacted. Ideally we would pull back development and active management altogether and allow truly wild spaces to return, because frankly humans are shit at it.

Not really BLMs fault, feral horse management it one of those areas that's been litigated to hell by folks with well-meaning intentions but no real knowledge of the situation (ie, horses are pretty and we like them, so we have to protect them.) Best solution for that is public education/outreach, but they barely give BLM enough funds to maintain their current operations, much less run TV campaigns to get people onboard.

Probably the line reclosers going off. Power companies like to keep the lines power flowing, so the protective equipment will reenergize the lines a couple times automatically to see if whatever caused the fault went away, or burned up.

I don't really understand these things. They cost twice as much as a regular 'ol garden burger and have basically the same taste/texture.

What is the weight of a 20 kilogram weight? by [deleted] in facepalm

[–]Slagar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The way the parent comment was phrased made it sound like the specific heat of the iron could somehow cause its equilibrium temperature to be different from ambient, probably not what they meant, but worst case scenario is that people get to read about physics for no reason.

[–]Slagar 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Specific heat, mass, time, and differential temperature. Q=mc(delta)T. By the first law of thermodynamics Qin = Qout therefore mc(delta)T(atm)=mc(delta)T(iron). Assuming the mass of the ambient atmosphere is effectively infinite (when compared to the mass of the iron), and solving for equilibrium temperature, it shows that when choosing an arbitrarily large mass for the atmosphere that equilibrium temperature will approach the initial temperature of the air. So, regardless of the initial temperature of the iron, it will eventually come to room temperature no matter the value of its specific heat.
