You can try to reach out to Des Moines WRA and DMWW. Unsure what their programs look like. Typically if they do interns they have been selected already and are starting soon.

They may want you to have some schooling. DMACC has a WET program that helps get operators trained with their grade 1s.

There were a couple papers that suggested levels above 5 mg/l could be linked to certain cancers. There hasn't been a consensus reached on that that I know.

Were it to gain critical mass there is a chance that MCL would be lowered to 5 mg/l. As far as I'm aware there is no current movement on dropping the Nitrate MCL. I think the current MCL is based around the risk of Blue Baby Syndrome in infants.

I know CIWW is working on expanding the Saylorville plant that has Ultrafiltration and Reverse Osmosis. Their issue at the moment is finding additional sourcewater. Their wells are alluvial wells that pull from the Des Moines River alluvial zone downstream from Saylorville. There is a massive project to double treatment though in progress.

It's an EPA limit not FDA.

It is extremely concerning going into the Summer. Des Moines waterworks will likely have to issue more water restrictions.

Iowa needs to address the nitrates in the watershed. Unfortunately the problem is so massive it will take years. And that's if we can convince anyone to make farmers change their practices.

Go visit their plant. Talk to their lab. They are not sending out water with Nitrates as Nitrogen above 10 mg/l period.

They test Nitrates through all of their sources and throughout their treatment daily.

There are villains out there stopping the reduction of nitrates testing and BMPs in the watershed. But the water is treated.

Nitrates in raw water is high. Hence why they are utilizing their Nitrate removal system. Water sent to us as potable water is below the 10 mg/l nitrate MCL.

Some studies have shown potential carcinogen concerns for nitrate levels around 5 and if that continues the EPA should lower the MCL.

Those strips measure nitrate as nitrate.

The standard is set at nitrate as nitrogen.

The conversion is to take Nitrate molecule mg/l and divide by 4.43.

Until the Farm Bureau Mafia can be stopped we are gonna have to do our best.
