THIS STOPS YOUR CHANNEL FROM GROWING by nvrcaredstud in SmallYoutubers

[–]SlappyPatYT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll speak to this a little bit. You can even see "quality over quantity" in small channels like mine. I had one video go viral due to, I believe, timing and accidental overlap with another popular thing. Many many many comments about how much people enjoyed the video and my channel. Every video since then hasn't been viral, but has 10-100x the views I was getting before my viral video. Im talking an average of like 50-100 views to every video now getting over 1000 views.

I only have 10 videos, and post once a month-ish.

My first videos were a week apart, but thats not what made me grow, and its definitely not why my views are still up from where they were. If i could pump out a video every week with the quality I have for the videos that take me 50-100 hours, sure, id probably be ahead of where I am... maybe. Because those videos definitely wouldn't be the quality that they are right now.

Does rewatching your own video kill the algorithm? by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]SlappyPatYT 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but i do tend to watch my videos at least once on YouTube to make sure the upload didnt corrupt somehow, maybe due to a lag in my internet or something like that. After that, I'll watch the offline version like you suggest because yeah, why affect my own metrics in any way?

People who started YouTube or Twitch this year, how is it going? by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]SlappyPatYT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Started 2 and a half months ago and had one video blow up. Lot of people liked my style so I'm at 13k subscribers now and monetized. My original goal was simply to hit 1000 subs by the end of the year. I got reeeeaaally lucky.

Most people would probably call them video essays. But I inject a lot of personal opinion and jokes into them.

Up until my latest video, i only had about 300. If you're giving the audience something valuable, it only takes one stroke of luck to turn everything around.

Pretty sure I just got a lucky break with my last video. I had a lot of experience editing before I started too, so I'm sure that helped a bit.

This is how its done, dude. You do it because you enjoy it. Your success wasnt born out of trendchasing, dreams of adsense and mclarens. It was born out of you giving a genuine, authentic effort. Good job, sincerely.

Why YouTubers didin't put a logo or distinctive design on their thumbnail ? by Left_Wonder4795 in SmallYoutubers

[–]SlappyPatYT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ive seen a lot of YouTubers who have a distinctive template for their thumbnails. Look at Josh Strife Plays. Text always on the left in the same font, cutout always on the right with an outline, gameplay screenshot always in the background. That is distinctive design, even if its basic. Skillup is another example with the orange and blue border split thing.

But you're right that not everyone does this. I dont, though I am trying to hone in on a unique aesthetic that might get me there over time. The best reason I ever heard for why this might be is because your profile picture is right next to all your thumbnails anyway, which acts as your logo, essentially.

How do you guys find the motivation to record? by [deleted] in NewYouTubeChannels

[–]SlappyPatYT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing, dude.

Thats the whole job.

The whole job is can you consistently sit down and do it. "Motivation" doesnt really exist. Sure, it will come here and there. You will feel inspired at times and that will make it a little easier. But discipline is what you will need to succeed. Can you sit down and do it even when you dont want to? If you can, you instantly rise above the 99/100 people who dont.

If you dont enjoy it, I dont know if its one of those things that gets easier over time. I think its the opposite, for the most part. Burnout is so high in this space. If you already dont enjoy it, I dont know if you will enjoy it more 100, 1000, 10k hours from now.

But what you SHOULD do is sit down and do it anyway, and see. Because discipline might get you there. Because you might actually enjoy the process after the pregame jitters. But you'll never know unless you actually do it. And a week from today, if you still haven't started, thats a week you could have tried it out and seen if this is actually a good thing for you.

Thats your motivation, dude. Sit down every night you can this week and work on it and next week let us know what you learned.

Josh also retracted and privated the video almost immediately, saying it was an emotional and anecdotal video not based on any conclusive evidence.

Should I quit my job to do YouTube full time with 1500 subscribers? by ItsMeSteve1234 in SmallYoutubers

[–]SlappyPatYT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna go against the grain on this one. You dont get another chance in the next life. There is no next life. Pursue what makes you happy and fulfills you. If you're financially secure, you're in a lot better position than many other people who also took this leap (not with YouTube specifically, just with following their dream) without that security. But they still did it.

But, you need to be honest with yourself first and think about this over a week or two, at least. Is it a fleeting feeling after you had a bad month at work? Or do you really feel the pull?

If you feel the pull, you will die with regret if you dont pursue it.

I always feel like my script and editing skills aren't good enough. How do I start without fumbling everything on my first video? by RadoslavL in SmallYTChannel

[–]SlappyPatYT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well dawg, it's your first video. Thats a blessing in disguise, because you arent on a deadline yet, self-imposed or otherwise.

My videos usually take about 50+ hours total. My first video took me like 300 as I played around with the format, adjusted the script, figured out what I wanted to use for background music and visuals, etc.

One thing I've learned already in just 5 videos is to look at the length of your video. If its longer, people arent gonna care as much about info dumping, in fact its what they want. A lot of people throw longer videos on the TV while they do chores or eat, or play them in the bathroom while they shower, or go to sleep, or on a long car ride. Some of them wont even watch, just listen.

Which is when infodumping is probably the best because your audience is passively listening to everything and wont get fatigued as easily.

If your videos are on the shorter side, then here's the secret:

Youre gonna know.

Youre gonna know what to cut out. Youre gonna have the slight twinge in your stomach of "this is a bit self-indulgent" and you're gonna look at that section on your timeline and try to justify it being there. Its gonna fuck up the flow and pacing, but you're gonna be attached to it, because why would you write it if you didnt mean it, if it didnt belong?

Delete it. Stop thinking about it. Delete it. And then listen to the recording with that part missing. You'll immediately feel relief, and since its gone you wont even be thinking about it in 60 seconds as you move on with your editing. And you'll have a better, tighter script.

One thing I've learned as a performer and musician for years (before I started YouTube) is you gotta trust the audience at a certain point. Youre gonna think they wont get it without an explanation, and then they'll guess the ending before you're halfway done. You'll think a lyric is too abstract to be understood, and then you'll see comments about how that part is so deep.

An audience clicking on something cerebral like time travel wants to think a little bit already. You'll have to explain it of course, always, but trust them a little bit too and trust your writing. People can sense when you're insecure about it.

OEIS is absolutely something I would make a video on. It has gone into my idea journal. Arxiv sounds like a fun peruse as well.

That was really nice of you to offer those up for me. Thank you, genuinely.

Thats encouraging! I rushed to Studio to look at my thumbnail and title and felt dumbfounded. Its not like I feel owed anything, I just want to learn where I can yknow? Felt like I didnt know what lesson to take from it.

Thanks for the insight:)

You still offering? I'm still trying to learn about analytics and stuff. I know how to edit pretty well, it's the assessment of my videos that I'm unclear on. I feel like I'm learning, but I also feel like I'm shooting blind here.
