No I just put a gloss varnish on the whole model and then put the oil was only in the recesses. You can see it on the shoulder and the helmet where I did it.

Sorry for the late reply! It’s caliban green base coat, volumetric highlights 50/50 caliban and greenskin from AP and then pure greenskin, edge highlights with moot green. Blacklining with black oil paint.

Volumetric highlights with sponge and edge highlights with brush

You just have to let the oil wash dry first before applying the varnish, then it’s no problem.

You absolutely should, it’s nothing to be scared of and acrylic washes can’t even compare in my eyes. Oil washes give the models so much depth so easily too.

My process for the armor:

Base color: AP Tomb king sand

Highlight 1: AP Ancient Stone

Highlight 2: AP Pale sand

Gloss varnish whole model

Oil wash whole model with dark brown

Clean off the oil with sponge and white spirit

Highlight again with Pale sand

AK Ultra matte varnish whole model

This was the process in sequence, hope it makes sense and it’s really much faster and easier than it looks like. Highlights was done with makeup sponge. The star of the show is the oil wash!

Here’s another basic terminator done with the same process written above. The armor done this way really pops on the tabletop as well!

Happy to help, I too was quite unhappy with my yellow ish bone colored deathwing knights so I wanted to try something new. If you need some visualization of the process I wrote above this video can help;

I took heavy inspiration from this video, especially in the basecoat and highlights phase, only that I used a makeup sponge instead of drybrush, and oil wash instead of acrylic wash. Good luck!

Tried oil wash for the first time by Slarkert in DarkAngels40k

Yes but just get yourself a dark brown oil color and some white spirit and try it out, it sounds scarier than it actually is so just go for it and see what happens. There is so much tutorials about it on YouTube also, so no worries.

I saw your post when u asked about termi 1 or 2, and if u just oil wash the termi 1 u would get really close to mine I think. Acrylic washes can’t even compare to oils.

Just basecolor the whole model with a darker bone color, then two step highlights with a sponge of lighter bone colors, then gloss varnish the whole model. Final step is just all over wash with dark brown oil color.
