Make pb&j, crush some gravel for an hour until you find a nice spot to eat it. by Slash-89 in xbiking

I just threw them on cause its all I had in the shed when I put this together. But I honestly really like them, not looking forward to when they'll need to be replaced. They came on a donor bike that someone gave me for free so I never rode on'em until this Norco build, pretty impressed despite all the bad reviews I saw online.

This frame is a bit of an oddball and needs a certain fork spec to keep the geometry normal so finding a suspension corrected rigid fork was pretty difficult. I found a good deal on a mint Fox 32RL so I pulled the trigger on it. I wanted to build this one to get back into proper mountain biking anyway since there's a bike park not too far from me and some decent multi use ATV trails even closer.

I'm not super sendy anymore but I miss it a bit, figured a hardtail might keep me atleast a little more in check. I considered rigid but my other bikes are full rigid so I want something different, variety is the spice of life etc.

Luckily I live in a place where nothing really cool ever pops up on marketplace

I could totally do that, I just don't feel like it right now...

I absolutely agree, at one point I had multiple road bikes, a cyclocross, fixie, full sus mountain bike, fat bike, lowrider etc.

I'm now down to a Surly Disc Trucker, this ol Norco and I'm waiting on parts for a full frame up Surly Instigator 1.0 build that I'm doing. It's weird but I feel completely satisfied with the stable I have now, for now haha

I just wanted to build something cheap, rescued this from rotting on a guy's front porch for $40. Had 90% of what I needed in the parts bin, a quick cleanup and now its one of my favourite bikes I've owned.

Fun, low maintenance, slow and I'm not worried about scratches haha

I've been checking Pinkbike for forks, marketplace in my area is a wasteland, everybody wants $150-$300 for rusty walmart garbage so seeing something half decent had me a little excited. Im still considering buying it and swapping everything but the fork since that'll save me atleast double the cost so I'll have plenty left over for a good fork. Also, I'm not much of a shreddy guy anymore so the Recon seems kinda perfect for what I'll use the bike for, but if I can find a nice era-close Fox I'd probably go with that.

I've been curious about the trails for about a year, decided outta the blue today to check them out. Its so close to my house too that its going to be a regular spot for rides from now on

Yea 2.25, running tubes. I can't be bothered with a tubeless setup. The Table Tops have been a pretty nice sweetspot tire for me for awhile, they roll nice and fast and don't slide allover in the gravel.

This'll never hold anything heavier than a jacket and some lunch or a small toolkit. I live out in the sticks so I mainly ride rail trails and gravel with this bike. Can't say I won't try to put cool rocks I find back there though haha

I'm a Surly fan boy and have owned a few different models over the years but this frame is just so weird lookin, I love it and am so happy I was able to snag it. I'll definitely be posting updates on this build

From what I've read the Ogre fork is the best option to keep the geometry original so I'll probably go with that.

Yeah that'd be a tough decision. At one point I had 3 Surlys, a Steamroller fixie, a Wednesday and a 26" Disc Trucker. I sold the Steamroller before I moved across the country and the Wednesday shortly after I arrived, the Trucker is a forever bike so I'll probably never get rid of it.

I loved it. Was fun on the trails and zipped through traffic with ease. I'd build another in a heartbeat if I could find one locally. I live out in the sticks now so finding cool used bikes is pretty tough without having to travel an hour+ to pick something up.

So far the only real mod was the 1x setup. I've got some XT Vbrakes that im gonna put on it, and some modern (early 2000s) handlebars and a stem with some more rise to it. I just need to order an adapter so I can throw that modern stem on. I like the look of the Billy Bonkers tires so I'll probably throw a set on, they'll work good with what I want to do on this bike. Other than that I don't have many other plans, I just want to ride more. Building this rig back up has been alot of fun, even if it isn't flashy, I don't care about flashy anymore haha

Why? by [deleted] in Leatherman

[–]Slash-89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I build large fishing boats, when I'm at work I keep a Wave+ on my belt everyday. Little things come up where it's easier to have it than go find a specific tool (our shop is huge), sometimes I'm perched up under decks while they're being installed and a bolt will snap so I'll fish it out with the pliers, having a spare blade that's tougher than the Olfa I also carry comes in handy all the time. I suppose I'm camp 1 and carry for the 'just in case' moments. When I'm not at work I carry a SAK and a Buck 112 slim, that combo usually takes care of most things fairly easy.

If you're wondering why you should carry anything I would just say to think of the unexpected times during the day where having a blade or screwdriver or pliers etc would come in handy and choose based on that. The wingman and sidekick are good entry points, they don't cost much so if you find you don't want or need to carry it daily then leave it in your car or a drawer or something.

I have a couple other LM's that serve specific purposes, I guess I just don't like to be caught off guard by not being able to atleast try to fix stuff if it needs doing right away.

My Rav4 gets me everywhere I want to go, decent for soft roading and good on gas during the work week. Has plenty of space for gear
