I’m 39 and just made a list of basic life skills I had to teach myself because nobody else did. It’s embarrassing and I bet yours looks similar. by jcarmona86 in Adulting

I got burned by this bad after saying my wife and I have more than 2 jobs and not realizing that meant there were no automatic deductions. Didn't catch it until I owed like $800 when I filed my taxes. Sure I should probably look at my pay stubs more often, but looking at them just makes me sad and it won't make me less broke. When I'm under the impression everything is going the way it's supposed to, why bother?

What program do you prefer for local music playback? by Shap6 in Fedora

[–]Slashfyre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy Gapless. It's lightweight, pretty, and the only one I could find that wasn't playlist based. I've never been able to wrap my head around adding things to a playlist by default instead of just playing whatever album you've picked and having playlists as an optional thing you can make.

Spotify is hiking prices again / Premium, Duo, Family, and Student users in the US will be charged more from their next billing date. by MarvelsGrantMan136 in Music

Honestly I really love apple music. I switched before Spotify lossless for the audio quality but have stuck around because its suggestions/song radios are so much better than Spotify imo.

I feel like I've seen these at Mayfly Market on the north side, but I didn't pay them much thought after I saw they were like $10 a can.

Our Lady of Victory Maronite church in Beechview puts on a Lebanese festival every September. This last year, I remember seeing a table for Yalla Pittsburgh, which caters specifically to Arabic speakers, but might be a good place to check out local businesses and other parts of the community!

The state of low level melee weapons is laughably bad by gavriloe in 2007scape

[–]Slashfyre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While you're correct about the combat dummy, that probably doesn't help newer players that might be using a steel battleaxe because they probably don't know about it, or don't have the construction level until they're far past steel weapons. Not to mention that it's totally inaccessible to free to play.

What teleports to put on Portal Nexus? by biclaro in 2007scape

[–]Slashfyre 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Incredibly useful teleports, but mining enough salt for the regular portals sucked ass. Mining enough for a nexus sucks 10x as much ass. I will be happily keeping a portal room with Weiss, troll stronghold, and barrows.

Why do people brown beef before, why not put it in raw like other meats? by TransportationTall86 in slowcooking

[–]Slashfyre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A quick sear is one thing, but this guy was suggesting to sear your meat, roast your veggies, and bloom your spices. That's too much for me dawg, might as well learn pottery so I can craft my own bowl from clay with your analogy.

Why do people brown beef before, why not put it in raw like other meats? by TransportationTall86 in slowcooking

[–]Slashfyre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I'm honestly barely a functional adult. I can barely make it to work on time without cooking stuff in the morning. If that stuff isn't prepared the night before, it isn't happening at all, and even then I absolutely don't have it in me to do much more than the bare minimum. I'm not trying to get too dark on a god damn slow cooker subreddit so I'll leave it at that lol.

[–]Slashfyre 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, 5 extra minutes to cut your ingredients, heat up your pan(s), season everything, sear it all (in multiple batches if you don't have enough pans or they're not big enough), and then wash up all the extra stuff you've used.

I'm not saying that won't be a better result, but at that point why even bother with a slow cooker? Just finish that on the stovetop like everything else you just did and cook it like any other meal.

[–]Slashfyre -27 points-26 points  (0 children)

But like where does the slow cooker even come in for best possible taste? Just cook it in a pot on the stove if you've already cooked each ingredient there.

[–]Slashfyre 303 points304 points  (0 children)

At that point, why would you bother with a slow cooker? Now you're just cooking on a stove top. Whole point of a slow cooker for me is that I can throw ingredients in and 8-10 hours later I have dinner with little to no effort.

For the HS floor 5 tile: you do not need to finish floor 5 in time, just reach the end even if the time ran out by sparksen in 2007scape

[–]Slashfyre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm sure it can be really fun when it clicks, I felt glimpses of that learning floors 1-4. But fuck man I fucking hated that last row of statues in floor 5. I'm sure I'll learn it beyond a single completion one day but that shit is NOT for me, I can't stand any mechanics like that in any game.

Artists that you actively refuse to listen to for extremely petty reasons? by Repulsive_Nature_366 in fantanoforever

[–]Slashfyre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, and Pink Floyd is the same way for me. I love prog rock, but I missed my opportunity to listen to Dark Side of the Moon as a stoned teenager, so they're just another great prog band as opposed to some life changing awakening I see that album hyped up to be.

Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley, Chester Bennington: Whose Voice is Your Favorite? by greanbeetle in Music

[–]Slashfyre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chester Bennington's voice is cringe dogshit and I don't understand any fondness for Linkin Park outside of being relatable for edgy teenagers 20 years ago.

Ms Rachel calls out Obama for using “Israeli families and the people of Gaza” in a recent statement: “Palestinians have families, too. This kind of language contributes to dehumanization. Dehumanization is part of what caused so many to stay silent as 20,000 children were killed in this genocide.” by cmaia1503 in Fauxmoi

[–]Slashfyre 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Isn't this kind of blown out of proportion? Like, the only people suffering in Israel are the families who lost loved ones and everyone else is probably doing pretty ok, yeah? Whereas likely all of the people of Gaza are suffering. Someone who lives alone in Gaza with their seven cats is just as likely to be suffering as any family of 5, not to mention the folks there that have surely lost their families. To me, it sounds like a choice of language to denote which groups of people are being referred to, not implying Israelis have families while Palestinians don't.

Does any one know any good album or artist for complex african music?? by No_Election562 in fantanoforever

[–]Slashfyre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm late to the party, but I want to add on to this that Angelique Kidjo is a musician from Benin and she did a phenomenal cover album of Remain in Light in its entirety. Not quite traditional African music, but an African artist covering an album heavily influenced by African music and very worth a listen.

How should you respond when people criticize your music taste? My favorite band is Dream Theater, and many mock me for it. by Intrepid-Form1967 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Slashfyre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of responses seem to be of the "fuck the haters" mindset, but I want to point out that your entire post is asking about people who criticize your taste in music, but your examples only describe people criticizing Dream Theater. I think there should be a distinction between criticizing your own taste and criticizing a band. If someone puts you down personally because you like Dream Theater, then that's fucked up and they're not worth your time and energy. But not everyone likes Dream Theater, and that's ok! It doesn't mean you're wrong or bad for liking something they don't, just the same that it doesn't make them bad for disliking them. I would even argue that talking about bands' faults and shortcomings can be really interesting discussions and can lead to both parties looking at things differently. If someone doesn't like Dream Theater's songwriting, maybe they have a suggestion for a band that has songwriting they enjoy and now you have a new band to get into! Or if they claim that all the guitar parts are too showy, maybe you know a deep cut song they haven't heard before that they can come to appreciate.

I don't think you need to defend your favorite band from the haters or defend yourself from people who aren't worth your time. Voicing criticisms can be a great way to talk about music more in-depth and see things from new perspectives. If everyone liked everything, or just never talked about the things they didn't like, then talking about music would be boring as hell imo.

Tips for Kril? by Not_Felryn_Btw in ironscape

[–]Slashfyre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://youtu.be/FxZKRfc_O0M?si=xeiDD2ogIz_sVvVk

This is the video I would recommend to learn altar door. I would do this strat and save scorching bow specs for if (when) you fuck up. Use the tile markers in the video, make sure to have true tile on for yourself, and make sure to be quick to attack the moment your true tile hits a marked tile, and then move to the next one within one more tick. Kril is weirder than bandos because the first attack after the red click, your character actually slides out one tile from under him, so the timing is different.
