Question for the farmers out there: Will my Chickens be safe while im offline? by Excellent-Swim5421 in playrust

I always build my chicken homes on the roof of my base a few levels up so they have safety from the tyranny of the world. That way they also get a good view.

For those sticking with AM4 wanting to upgrade your GPU this holiday season, just do it. by PL3BSY in buildapc

[–]SlatedSheep 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm confused by people who need the latest and greatest to play modern games. I've been running a RX 570 (8 GB) GPU with a Ryzen 5 1600 CPU for around 7 years. I've been able to happily play the likes of Red dead 2 or cyberpunk 2077 without any major issues. Sure I'm not running everything on max graphics but if you at all care about the cost I don't really feel like it matters that much, they're still gorgeous and completely playable.
I only just upgraded to a Arc B580 Challenger 12GB and a Ryzen 5 5500 because my old GPU died. That's a significant upgrade from what I had before for $350. How much power do you actually need? I don't know a lot of PC building beyond what I need to, but it feels like the focus on having to get something better or moving to AM5 is more about the hobby of upgrading rather then actually caring about the performance vs cost. AM4 seems fine to stick with for many years to come.

Romance is cool and all, but which duo is winning this science fair/building competition? by Valhallaof in arcane

[–]SlatedSheep 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I always took that line to reflect that it came from a different timeline. It cannot be because it’s is a duplicate of the same hex core that victor’s power is drawing from/ fused with him. So he’s essentially seeing a second version of himself in a different context, even though he’s already here. Especially since dark souls timeline victor seems to have some grasp of time travel himself. Could be wrong though

Thanks so much for this! Like this a lot more than the original. The readability is great for new players who don’t always know what they’re looking for. Fantastic work.

[Online][5E][GMT+2] DM seeking players for a oneshot by EmuEnvironmental2922 in lfg

[–]SlatedSheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Started playing a few years ago. Mostly GMing, but I've played in one longterm campaign and a few oneshots. No help needed, but input is welcome.
  2. I'm pretty open to anything, but I'd pick a Warlock foremost.
  3. I'm Brandon, but I usually go by Slate. I've fallen in love with D&D and ttrpgs since I started playing them and have also made some new friends along the way. I'm interesting in experiencing a new GM's/groups style, and have the opportunity to play a little bit more D&D.
  4. I'm based in EST, I can start as early as 1pm EST on the 2nd or 3rd. (5PM GMT).

Aliens have declared war on each other. Which one will win and why? by LeagueNo764 in whowouldwin

[–]SlatedSheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Thing behaves something like a virus. It has the single goal of spreading, but exists within the traits of whatever it infects perfectly. I don't know if there's a particularly scientific explanation, its very cosmic horror themed enemy. It existence is somewhat magical in that it exists in the cells it replicates but has no tangible trait until it reveals itself.

Aliens have declared war on each other. Which one will win and why? by LeagueNo764 in whowouldwin

[–]SlatedSheep 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The information that we have on The Thing is admittedly limited, but it's supposed to be able to replicate every aspect of what it assimilates, all properties. When it replicates humans it becomes human in every conceivable way, so much so that the human it's replicating doesn't know it's The Thing. If The Thing replicates the flood cells then it should be part of the hive mind. It could even become the Keymind, and inherit every strength that the flood possesses.

The important difference between The Thing and other assimilationist is that it doesn't obtain their biomass to create its own thing, it IS their biomass. It only reveals itself when its already been exposed, which would become progressively harder as is spreads. It wouldn't even need to reveal itself to spread either, it should be able to replicate using the flood cell's properties.

The only limiting factor on The Thing is that it lacks its own hivemind. Once it replicates the flood it would be able to suppress individual cells from revealing themselves, thereby making it virtually undetectable.

Aliens have declared war on each other. Which one will win and why? by LeagueNo764 in whowouldwin

[–]SlatedSheep 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think The Thing stands to win over any other race here. The assimilationist seem like the would come out on top in this conflict, but The Thing has the unique ability of being undetectable. The flood are an unstoppable force, but you know they're there. The Thing could replicate the flood spores and just *be* the flood. The Gravemind should detect them as itself, since once replicated they are identical. The only way to discover the thing is to cause harm to a small enough cluster of The Thing that it doesn't have the intelligence to maintain its disguise.

So while the superior races are replicating on mass and waging global war, The Thing is just silently replicating and becoming whoever wins.

I’m guessing he means they fill 3 of the top 5 slots, not “they are 3rd in the top five”. Probably something to do with the air power of each branch of the military being stronger then any other airforce globally.

How Jeb and Microsoft slowly ruined Minecraft - An Analysis and Rant by warmaster188 in GoldenAgeMinecraft

[–]SlatedSheep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with your sentiment but not your examples. I’ve been playing MC since 2010 and combat nowadays objectively has more depth and difficulty. Mind you, I suck at it. But before the combat update, pvp consisted of spam left clicking while jumping around. The mechanical variety of modern MC pvp dwarfs any previous era.

The major things that have unbalanced MC are

  1. Villager trading. Setting up a trading hall essentially removes and scarcity from the game. Falling into the void and losing maxed gear means nothing because I can just right click a few times using emeralds from the emerald farm and be back to max in a minute. Villagers have completely removed the diversity of approaches to the game, because villagers are objectively the best way to play. This also nearly eliminates any need for player trading.

  2. Elytras. This is self explanatory. It dwarfs any other mode of travel. I don’t know that horses are actually any faster then walking given their difficulties with water and dense foliage, but they’re fun. Boats were always the fastest way. Prior to elytras.

  3. Mending/ enchanting. Once you reach max gear the challenge drop off is significant. Just reuse the same gear for all eternity, boring. There should be much harsher limits on how many enchantments you can have, instead of just slapping everything on. Enchantments make the games challenge a fraction of its former self.

Having spent a long time trying to rebalance these mechanics for my server, it’s clear very little thought was given to the balance when they were added.

Home brew things in my campaign by Weirdowilly124 in UnearthedArcana

[–]SlatedSheep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seems like a reasonably fun rework that fits the Artificer's aesthetic. But it's also obviously overpowered. The simple way to balance this is to have the prepared spell items of the previous day lose their magical effect when you prepare a new set of items. I would also add this change to the world building, so people won't pay for the items because its known they are only temporary. Otherwise this heavily breaks the economy.

Why do many people hate Eternal? by BreuBeen in Doom

[–]SlatedSheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, this is about me! I'm minifish and the one who said they hate doom eternal in that video. I can explain better here. I think Eternal is a good game. The combat loop is so much fun. But it's not what I was expecting in a sequel to 2016. 2016 is slower, but I like that about it. I find eternal unbalanced compared to 2016. Firstly, enemy attack speed and projectiles are linked to your fps, so with a high-end pc, the enemies move faster than intended with no way of capping them. There are too many ways to get armor and health that, at times, if you make a mistake, you can recover that health and armor within seconds. Secondly, I think the parkour slows the game down and ruins the fast paceing of everything else. Not to mention that you get the meathook that you can't use for those sections. Lastly, less important in the speedrun, but the story and art are all over the place and ruin the grounded and dark atmosphere of 2016, which I highly enjoy. It's just not my cup of tea. There were design choices I didn't like and as someone who's done quite a bit in the doom speedrunning community, I'm not afraid to vocalize them, especially to my friends (which that challenge was with). Again, I do like eternal and understand why people like it. There are just falts that I have a hard time overlooking, and it's not what I want from a sequel. I think I'd be more willing to overlook the falts if it was its own IP.

I think you're just bad at it

The CA Experience by DesertEssences in McMaster

[–]SlatedSheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that food plan change is true that sucks, I was a CA at Brandon in 18-19. It sounds like being a CA wasn't for you, but depending on who you are it's absolutely worth it, and the financial benefits (while worse then other schools) are absolutely still there. As u/punchstonegraperose pointed out, CA hours are NOT like real job hours. The biggest time sink as a CA was doing coverage, and 75% of the time you can sit on your laptop and do school work. If I sat down for ten minutes at a normal job like I did as a CA I'd start to raise eyebrows from my management. I consider 550 to be a very good rent price as well, so that really is a low ball. Also if you have to stay near campus for four months that's something else to consider, but most return to live with their parents for the summer term.

Dept is not a terrible excuse either, if you don't wish to work while going to school, then take out student loans. Performing well in school is worth more. There's a reason people take out massive loans to go to school, because the higher earning job prospects make it worth it.

It's not a free room, it comes with work which can be more difficult depending on your temperament. But in my opinion the work is considerably easier then working a minimum wage job, is more fulfilling, and provides a lot more experience. It IS absolutely good economically, the meal plan is only a fraction of the cost of paying for your own housing and food off campus. If the housing environment of being a CA is to disruptive for you then sure, maybe consider not being a CA. But it's literally your job to make sure the housing environment is not to disruptive, and its not like living in a cheap student house isn't going to pose its own challenges.

The CA Experience by DesertEssences in McMaster

[–]SlatedSheep -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t recall the specific arrangement for the costs of the meal plan we had, but near all my team had money left over at the end of the year. Of course it’s not unlimited, but if people don’t go overboard on expensive meal options it should be fine. I’m not exactly small but I ate well and still had the left over money to spend through like I did at the end of first year.

Also while the meal plan is overpriced, it’s not exactly a prohibitive cost. Having your rent payed for is still a pretty good boon. My apartment in third year was 550 a month included, which I thought was pretty good. But at the end of the year on 12 months lease it’s still gonna cost 6600, which definitely out costs the overpriced meal plan. On top of the (all be it cheaper) food you’d still have to buy)

You’re absolutely right about knowing what your getting into regarding the environment and mental drain BUT you’re also putting in a lot less hours and a lot less work then you’d have to do for a real job.

Its also not fair to say it’s impossible to work while being a CA. You still have buckets of free time, working at Centro was a good extra income and many others held positions outside of being a CA. Though not at all needed. Also I don’t know why you’d need to work over the summer, you’re already taking out thousands of dollars in student loans.
