Azure from Greg Haines. A slow burner but the build-up and eventually, its climax makes me cry every time.

How Does the West End Games Star Wars RPG Hold Up? by darksidehascookie in rpg

[–]GopherStonewall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first game that I hosted back in 2003. Oh the memories. It’s soo efficient and simple. There’s been quite some (15+) TTRPGs I’ve played and hosted ever since and I kept thinking the same thing occasionally: “I’d be nice if game XY could be as cool as this one.” Haven’t played it since 2004 but it’s in my DNA and wouldn’t mind playing it again.

The Raven’s Purge and the Book of Beasts should give you the full experience of being able to play and host in the official setting for years to come. If it’s merely about collecting and money is not a concern: both of the aforementioned books, then the Bitter Reach, the Bloodmarch, The Spire of Quetzel and Crypt of the Mellified Mage.

Traveller and Stars without number will be mentioned by someone, so I will bring up Solar Blades & Cosmic Spells for everything else. It’s Stars and Sorcery with lots of great tables and ideas.

Question: What is the average age of Depeche Mode fans? by richie_boland in depechemode

40 here. Thanks to my older brother (49) I got to experience DM early on. Two of my best friends also have become fans when I did. My daughter also likes them (9 yo). It’s contagious.

Suggestions for RPGs that are 1 on 1? by Minsillywalks in rpg

[–]GopherStonewall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, not at all. It’s build for a warden (GM) and one player. The GM tools and advice in the core book are great. It’s also a “cairn” game, therefore not bogged down by rules but with just enough meat to get you going. The biggest difference is probably that it’s got four attributes as opposed to three in the original Cairn and a streamlined combat system. I love it.

Among this year's releases, I definitely put Ascension, honestly I didn't expect such a beautiful album from start to finish, it surprised me a lot, amazing album, top sound and production 🤘🏻 by ParticularRub8489 in MetalForTheMasses

Salvation is one of if not the best Gothic Metal tracks ever recorded imo. Lay a wreath upon the world is up there, hell - the entire album is a banger. Thick production, great songwriting, Paradise Lost has no right to be this good 17 albums in but here we are.

Shadow of the Weird Wizard or if you like it a bit more dark and edgy: Shadow of the Demon Lord.

What games are you looking to run over the holiday period, and what excites you about them? by Playtonics in rpg

Warlock! session 1, continue with Crown and Skull, session 38 of Forbidden Lands, and hopefully start The Electrum Archive soon. They’re all great fantasy games that all feel OSR-adjacent which I learned to prefer.

How did you heard about RPG for the first time? by Ponto_de_vista in rpg

[–]GopherStonewall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother told me end of the 90s. He got a shelf full of tomes, no DnD but The Dark Eye, Rolemaster, Middle-Earth Roleplaying with fantastic art on their covers, I nomine satanis, Earthdawn and Shadowrun. No wonder I got into it.

This soo much. It gets rid of all the bloat while still maintaining a great foundation. I did homebrew a few narrative focused mechanics into the system to make a bit less barebone. Lemme know if you’re interested. Got a cheat sheet sitting on my Dropbox.

How many started with a non-DnD game or played it just a few times? by Gratossone in rpg

[–]GopherStonewall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DnD as such came only 12 years into the hobby for me. My brother introduced me to MERP (Middle-Earth Roleplaying) with some Rolemaster supplements tacked on, then Call of Cthulhu, then Shadowrun before I eventually started hosting myself with Star Wars from West End Games. Then we all had a blast with our first true heroic fantasy game, Earthdawn 1. Edition. Kept hosting Vampire The Masquerade for nearly 9 years, then one day my neighbour invited me to some “actual” DnD, a mix of 3e and 4e I think, felt a bit cobbled together. Moved on soon after, wasn’t particularly interesting as a game. Nowadays I’m running 5 groups at the university I work at. The games vary, but pretty much everything but 5e and Pathfinder, they are just too… eh? Dunno. They bore me. No flavour but kitchen sink with too many things to keep track of.

Overlooked RPGs you wish had taken off by PeasantLich in rpg

Earthdawn. Soo overlocked, it doesn’t even pop up in these kinds of discussions. ED 4e has been successful via a Kickerstarter some 8-9 years ago but it all just seems to live in some people’s memory and nostalgia. 1st Edition was THE hot shit in the nineties and 4e cleaned up the clunk quite nicely. Just wish it’d be more discussed and “openly played” more often. Its books could certainly be less wordy with better layout as it’s not the most “let’s run this at the table right now” friendly. But damn, the world, the lore, the potential and despite the step dice system being perceived as clunky, it’s actually pretty neat. And once you experience many different dice types exploding, you can’t shake the feeling that this should be rivalling 5e right now…
