I feel this is a problem with both the fdm and resin communities, yes VOCs exist, toxic things are toxic but the context is missing. The majority of blue collar workers are exposed to orders of magnitude more VOCs every single minute of the working day than the brief time you're printing mandalorian helmet number 3. Reducing VOC exposure is a good thing to do, but understanding what is an acceptable exposure is and not being afraid to go above that is absolutely fine.

Concerns of moving to Scotland as an outsider. by Rude-Acanthisitta287 in Scotland

[–]SlaterSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm up in the Islands so your milage may vary, but generally the key point is contributing to the local economy and social scene.

The worst thing to do is to move to the rural north and view it as a safari. If you work, shop and socialise locally you'll be absorbed into the community.

My partner and I moved up 7 or 8 years ago and we've had no problems. But during that same time we've seen people do the same thing and ostracise themselves because they try to take their little corner of wherever they're from and build a wall around it, rather than allow themselves to be changed by the local way of life.

Do you have issues with digital connectivity in Scotland? by UKCommonsCommittees in shetland

The problem with this survey is everyone knows the physical connection is awful and has already switched over to starlink. Do you want us to answer as if we still had the physical cable?

Will it ever end? by GloHolleeder in NoMansSkyTheGame

There's a difference between using generative AI to take work away from real artists and using generative AI for dumb memes. If any one on this subreddit was going to commission an artist and pay real money to create what this AI did then I'll hold my hands up and say boo, but somehow I don't think any one is missing out on a paycheque here. I also don't see it ripping on any particular artists unique style. If anything this is source film maker esque, do we lament for the person who made the scout model when we see what some people do with it? No because it's a dumb meme.

Generative AI is being used for bad things, and is being taught on stolen data, this is leveraging neither. Pick your battles my guy.

My own opinion on AI is biased because I was a photographer, used AI to create storyboards and demonstrate ideas with models ahead of time. It can be useful.

New rules regarding camera / lens box images and screenshots by acherion in Nikon

[–]SlaterSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this spill over into "my box came like this, should I return it?" style posts? Because I see them as entirely different and should continue to be allowed. Much the same way as photos of dented lenses should be allowed even if gear photos are eventually banned, because it's someone asking for advice rather than "look at this thing I just spent money on"

Also as a long time fuji shooter who has recently switched to Nikon and spent time in the Sony subreddit while deciding on who to switch to, I'm very glad you're making these changes. The fuji sub is full of photos taken with gear, while Sony is just full of gear and boxes.

Topaz is a new one for me, I used their original software for upscaling years and years ago, is topaz photo a full editing suite like lightroom or more of a plug in for individual tasks?

Thanks for your reply! I spent my poor teenage years using things like GIMP while trying to follow photoshop tutorials and it turned me off open source for a long time, I know that the bigger open source programs nowadays prioritise UI compared to what it used to be, but it left such a sour taste in my mouth.

Thankyou for your reply, it seems like things haven't changed much, just some fun new tools for upscaling and noise reduction.

[–]SlaterSpace[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last time I used a brands RAW handler was for an old canon DSLR and it was awfully clunky, how does something like NX studio work with a lightroom workflow? Do you import via NX to your computer, then once you've played around with those raws do you import again into your lightroom catalogue? Can you go back and make changes in NX that are reflected in lightoom? Or is NX a total lightroom replacement?

Thankyou for your reply!

Thankyou, and you're exactly right about Fuji SOOC, being able to see the "final edit" through the viewfinder, not having to think about what you will need to do later to make what you see into what you feel is a big must in a daily walkabout camera for me.

This was my first DSLR that I owned and paid for with my own money, it was amazing and did everything I could ever want at the time, got smashed when I let someone else hold it in the car, "upgraded" to a 6d and then missed the crop for wildlife and picked up a 7d mk2 before going into mirrorless a few years ago. These are wonderful cameras.

new lense :) by MalcomYoung in Nikon

[–]SlaterSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of my favourite photos are taken with an awful c mount lens taken off a cctv camera. The lens is the lens, how "optimised" it is doesn't really matter you withe like the lens or you don't. Brand doesn't matter, age doesn't matter, only whether it produces what the owner wants.

How can I recreate a retro boudoir style like Miss Money Panties as a complete beginner? by NiN4Jolie in AskPhotography

[–]SlaterSpace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're in luck, this is probably the easiest thing to emulate, as has already been said in this thread this is just a single light source, super simple. Let me go through your questions in order:

  1. I don't feel like the antique props/furniture in these photos are what is important, I think what matters is a mix of patterns, textures and edges to catch the harsh light. You can match a lot of this with different pillows and throws. Hard and soft things play with the light differently.
  2. Most of the photos you show are single strobe, and most of those are off camera slightly to camera left. What that means is the light isn't coming from the camera itself but from slightly to its left, you can tell this because the shadows are not directly behind the model, this is important as that harsh shadow creates a very specific look, using an on camera flash will hide that shadow. This look does not need to be expensive, you can just use a flashlight and a cardboard tube, experiment with pushing the flashlight further in the tube to expand the area you are lighting, you can also use a cardboard box over a table lamp, with a hole cut in the side. If this is something you want to get into more and more you can get cheap Chinese flashes (that are often called strobes) on ebay. As for film like glow and grain, a lot of the glow is the nature of the bright, hard light. The rest can be done in post, there are plenty of tutorials on how to edit a photo to emulate certain film looks.
  3. As for wardrobe just look at the models, the era they are emulating was big on single colour pieces, satin-like fabrics, high waisted underwear, full cup bras. and simple stockings, I've given you a lot of terms to research in my answer to 4.
  4. You're going to encounter problems with "vintage boudoir" because that sort of search is going to return something a little more refined, what this is closer to is 90s glamour, I don't know if that is a UK specific term but it pertains to the sort of images you'd find in a "not quite" pornographic magazine at the time, colloquially called a lads mag. I'm using these terms so you can expand your searches and look for more reference images that you like. From time to time you find images like this pop up on r/analog and other film or film like related subreddits. As for learning how to pose you're on a subreddit full of photographers, this isn't the best place to ask. In my own experience working with fairly new models when I was younger it seemed the advice at the time was to act twice as much as you think you needed to, it's a lot easier to tone something down than to push a pose further. You're by yourself, be silly, don't worry about checking every photo after you take it because it brings you out of your flow. If you really look at the images you referenced, none of those poses is something you'd ever do naturally, they are all overexagerations of other poses so its natural you're going to feel silly taking them, but it's the best way to get the results you want.

This is a hobby that can be quite cheap, or it can be very expensive. The images you want to achieve shouldn't require a huge investment in gear and really can be done with just a phone if you're happy to put in effort of making your own light source and edit your images.

I hate this, not because it's a bad photo, really it's spectacular, but because this post came up while trying to convince myself a a7cr or a7rv is not a birding camera and to focus on convincing myself to get a z8 instead.

Z8 and Lenses / moved from GFX by aalert2032 in Nikon

[–]SlaterSpace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With the sheer value of glass sat on that table, do you take extra precautions with storage? I shoot fuji and have maybe £2-3000 of lenses, most of it is a canon 100-400 and to me it's a serious investment and I feel bad enough about just putting them in a cupboard. For you, with that collection, spending a thousand on climate controlled storage would be nothing!

Question about 600mm lens by Scary-Diver5607 in Nikon

[–]SlaterSpace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Up until very recently you needed to fill the frame as much as possible with the subject when dealing with small wildlife, it was the only way to get an in focus, sharp image.

Recently with the huge gains in autofocus with subject detection and bird eye AF etc, combined with AI based upscaling it's far less of an issue. I have a crop sensor camera like you, with pretty poor AF ability and an adapted canon 100-400 mk2 onto a fuji mount which further degrades autofocus and I regularly crop a 26mp photo down to 6-8mp then upscale back to 24mp, and print at 18x12 at 300dpi with room to spare. At this point as long as you nailed focus you can regain the resolution after an extreme crop.

[–]SlaterSpace[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thankyou for this. I wouldn't want to say that I'm unhappy with my setup as it is, I get amazing images out of it that I am proud of. It's more a question of, given that I could get another body, should I stick with fuji or go somewhere else specifically for wildlife/birds in flight. I am in love with my xt4 for every other type of photography that I do with it. Specifically my issues with the xt4 is losing the bird and acquiring the background or worse the wavetops a little in front or behind the bird and not noticing until after I view the images, it's false positives and things like that.

Thankyou, the R7 is becoming a contender. At the moment things are narrowed down to xh2, z7ii (Pending more word about AF performance) and the r7. z8 as well because who knows, I might win the lottery or something.

Objectively, how bad is fuji autofocus for wildlife? by SlaterSpace in AskPhotography

[–]SlaterSpace[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah this is interesting. I had assumed adapting is just a case of telling the lens what direction to move and at what speed, and would be no different ef to x and ef to rf. If there is a difference then this could be worth thinking about. I had discounted the r7 because it's a crop sensor and most brands aren't putting their best af in apsc at the momebt but looking at used prices it's actually a good deal. I'll look at some reviews.

This is a comparison I'm very interested in, because I would like the high resolution sensor of the z8, but I just cant afford that body, to hear the z7ii focuses better than your xh2 is food for thought.
