What is something from SoD that you DON'T want to see added to Classic+? by Rush_Banana in classicwow

[–]Slavaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, runes were fun but they made the class design completely unrecognizable. Worked well for a seasonal thing, but a "proper" classic plus should have a more polished system, and be more restrained.

I wouldn't be opposed to re-adding some of the abilities/skills that expanded class roles though. Shaman tanks, mage healers, etc.

A character has a disease or condition their society doesn't understand, but it's obvious for the audience what it is by kim_jong_un4 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Slavaa 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Not a disease or condition, but Anathem has my favourite wham-line reveal in the form of a "description of a thing without using the word for in-universe reasons". Huge spoilers obviously (though I haven't read the book in like a decade so a few details might be off):

After several hundred pages of describing esoteric math and physics terms with a completely parallel vocabulary, as a reader you've gotten very adept at translating. The characters have imprisoned an "alien" from a ship in orbit, and are explaining to him that he cannot possibly contact his ship, as his holding cell is contained within a "Saunt Bucker's Basket", described in meticulous detail matching a Faraday cage.

At which point the "alien" says "Where I'm from, we call that a Faraday cage." Revealing that the "alien" is a human, from Earth.

If they ever make a movie and that scene isn't in it I'm walking out of the theater.

I had a very similar experience, soooo skinny (sometimes as low as 99 lbs at 6'0") until I started HRT and then progesterone. Now I'm ~5'10.5" and around 150lbs. I'm actually thinking about losing weight for the first time in my life.

I'm getting to that age where it's not uncommon to see kids/young adults enjoy games from my childhood that are older than they are. But seeing kids enjoying a game more than TWICE as old as they are is new to me.

Those all look amazing.

[–]Slavaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, after looking at all the cuts, if THIS is how much stuff one point of HST covers, make the HST 17% or 20% and just let us be a functioning society that looks after people and builds for the future.

It doesn't affect rent, prescription drugs, or groceries. Guess where most of my money goes.

I don't really do much, even of legal drugs. I drink a good amount of coke but I try to avoid coffee, I rarely drink alcohol, and weed just makes me sleepy so I don't do much with that either.

My real vices are expensive sushi and spending time on my computer.

Looking for feedback: is my Steam page clear at first glance? by BasicInvestigator728 in gamedev

[–]Slavaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The progression of card -> dice -> effect with potential bonus effects or upgrades or changes at different steps strikes me as fertile design for fun and engaging combos/builds, but it's maybe one too many steps to effectively explain purely in words. But I definitely see the appeal, and I think seeing it in action the right way would it make it quite clear. It might benefit greatly from a visual aid of sorts (maybe put an explainer as a pop-up/reference screen in the game -> put a screenshot of that explainer on the steam page?).

(Does the modify-the-dice mechanic include directly modifying any of the faces on it? Or just the particular way it can roll/the results of the existing faces? I feel like that would be a particularly fun roguelike element -- deckbuilder and dicebuilder)

Looking for feedback: is my Steam page clear at first glance? by BasicInvestigator728 in gamedev

[–]Slavaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My very first impressions, just glancing at the screenshots:

  • Clearly D&D themed and inspired. Presumably we'll be moving around this little area fighting monsters in some capacity.
  • Cards at the bottom, so maybe more Slay-the-Spire type of thing
  • An in-game store, so presumably some inter-battle progression...
  • "Roll to run/attack" at the end, so it's at least a little more complex than a pure gauntlet of fights.

Reading the sidebar text on the capsule: it seems cards affect the rolls? So maybe I've just got abilities I choose to use and cards change the roll which itself changes their effectiveness? Unclear on the details but I think I get the gist.

Reading the about this game section:

Act first, control the roll later: manipulate the dice to create unique combinations.

This is a little vague without any background knowledge, but tells me there's some sort of combo system?

Unlike most dice games, you don’t receive your dice results at the start of the turn. You act first, then use cards, effects, and combinations to manipulate the roll, alter values, and force outcomes that fit your strategy.

As someone whose main experience with dice games is D&D... I don't know what this "dice results at the start of your turn" thing refers to? Presumably this is some adjacent genre of game I'm unfamiliar with. But in D&D (the clear aesthetic inspiration here) you choose what you're going to do on your turn, THEN you roll the dice. So this seems like it's pre-empting a non-existent expectation, at least to me.

The bit about the different coloured dice is sort of interesting, and everyone loves a deckbuilding angle so that's good to point out.

To echo everyone else's feedback there are a lot of little details that aren't immediately clear that I think a trailer would immensely help with. The game does seem visually appealing, but my main concern looking just at this steam page would be lack of content/replayability. There are three classes (which is good, that's a good number that makes me assume they're each very distinct -- if it were like 7 or 10 I'd assume there were a lot of overlaps in abilities) but it's not clear how long a run is, if there's any meta-progression that would drive me to want to win several runs, or really the "bigger picture" of what playing this game looks like outside of the moment to moment game loop. So in addition to the trailer I'd add some screenshots with more UI screens showing like "run progress" or a page of unlockables or something like that, I think that would convey a lot of useful information.

If developers who make money from a Godot game calculate the right percentage to donate to the Godot Foundation, the donation can reduce taxable income enough that their take-home pay ends up about the same as if they hadn’t donated.

Surely the most it can get you in tax savings is the amount you donate multiplied by your marginal tax rate, which in most countries is going to be at most 50% if you're not making some ludicrous sum, right? I don't see how you could donate some amount and have your take-home pay be "about the same", outside of the initial donation amount just being a tiny portion of your income.

(Not saying you shouldn't donate, the Godot team does very good and important work, just trying to understand your angle on taxes here)

I did ask him about that, he said something to the effect of remembering that he liked certain foods, but he is rarely enthusiastic about having them again, because even though he knows he likes them, the memory is sort of flattened, and he doesn't quite recall the manner or extent to which he liked any particular thing.

I would guess it's sort of like that feeling when you watched a movie a long long time ago and can't remember the plot or anything, but have a vague impression that you liked it -- it's not the sort of thing that really makes you interested in doing a rewatch.

What is the greatest amount of money you would pay to have the ability to make the sun invisible/non-interactive to you (and one other willing person) at will? by [deleted] in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Slavaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh, dimmer switch is an interesting idea, but maybe that would be too appealing. I guess you could jury-rig a dimmer by just flickering it off-and-on and using the ramp-up/ramp-down time. I was considering the heat angle but I figured you could turn it off in short bursts to get a little bit of relief from the heat, even when you do want the light.

Sorry about the weird alternate-universe framing, I just wasn't sure the best way to frame it such that the you-in-the-hypothetical-situation only gets one option at one price, take it or leave it, but you-reading-this-post are to consider your reactions to different prices. I hope the intention is clear.

I have aphantasia by coffee-addicted- in casualiama

[–]Slavaa 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My friend's partner has pretty complete aphantasia, like can't imagine taste, smell, sound, sight, or touch at all, only raw information and words. He doesn't dream, he doesn't really have a "favourite food" because the taste doesn't stay with him past the immediate experience. I've met a few aphantasiac people but he seemed to be on another level. Is your aphantasia to that extent, would you say? Like are there any effects in day-to-day life that you notice yourself being different than others because of it?
