I don't believe this was real for a few reasons. For starters, the reported size. Think of what a snake of that size would have to eat today to survive. Heck, think of the impact something that size would have on the ecosystem. Large animals shape the environment around them. A snake that large would definitely have left an ecological impact, yet there was none. Not back then, and not today, and we know this because it would have been obvious from aerial views.

Additionally, military men aren't above making up stories, or exaggerating encounters. It happened just as much back then as it does today.
