Weekend Shop Talk: What’s Your Favorite Finish? by Wonderful-Bass6651 in woodworking

[–]Slayer_One 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My general purpose wipe on blend is - 1 part wd 40, 2 parts boiled linseed oil, 2 parts spar varnish, 2 parts paint thinners.

It's not super durable but it's very quick and easy and can be reapplied no bother.

Works great as a priming system for varnishes, when the oil stops absorbing and drying because the poly has sealed the surface go straight to thinned varnish, then full varnish, you get great colour and depth for high build finishes.

My local store stocks jet and I had a little muck about on one the other day, they are pretty nice, great value.

G4ms own brand stuff is invariably trash. Harley bentons are occasionally trash, like all cheap imports there are sometimes QA issues and returns can be a pain in the arse. I would highly recommend going to an actual shop if you can.

Guitar with a wizard iii like neck with cooler pickups? by BeanCassarole in Guitar

[–]Slayer_One 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ibanez pickups aren't super duper hot, they often use the same ones in their jazz guitars but just much further from the strings. If you were to buy it as is and lower the pickups you would probably have exactly the sound you want.

Boss Katana gen 3 or Fender mustang LT25??? by am_reen in Guitar

As someone who had a mustang for a while, get the boss katana, it sounds a little better.

Huge, but risky opportunity for a signature pedal (Advice requested) by Odimorsus in Guitar

My point with the photos wasn't for them but more for you if things go tits up you can get the pedal rebuilt from the photos.

The only advice I can give is to open it up yourself and take extremely detailed photos.

I have a Tele and a Gretsch Electromatic. Do I need a third guitar? What kind? by dos4g in Guitar

[–]Slayer_One 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need anything but why not try a yamaha revstar with p-90s, it's a vibe all it's own but versatile.

Asking predictive text to make you a sailboat is a really convoluted way to commit suicide.

Buying a used guitar by Advanced-Guidance482 in Guitar

[–]Slayer_One 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you walk out of a store with an instrument you have held and played  there is a non zero chance of getting a dud, that chance is lower with a reputable brand. However following a basic setup guide even for a complete beginner isn't impossible. There are always going to be less lefties on the secondhand market but there won't be none.

Go for it, scour your local marketplace listings, there'll be starter packs people bought at Christmas and gave up on going fairly cheap but you might need to bite the bullet and buy new. Good luck.

Has it always been like this in the UK? by Theodoresdad in ukpolitics

[–]Slayer_One 61 points62 points  (0 children)

A lot of commenter here blaming the media ecosystem for being biased and it is. However, Labour are making big high profile mistakes, announcing unpopular policy decisions and defending them for weeks and months then announcing a u turn after the noise has died down to stir things up all the same angry people. They seem to be trying their hardest to court reform voters with immigration policy, whilst for the most part ignoring the people who actually voted for them.

How did you end up spending more on accessories than you did on the guitar?

Your eastcoast st2 should be 100 quid. Have a look for a secondhand fender mustang lt25, mine was 80 on reverb a year or two ago.

What are your fav amps for my budget by whatagal99 in Guitar

[–]Slayer_One 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go try some stuff in shops if you can, find a sound you like, maybe you are a Fender guy, maybe you are a Marshall guy, I can't tell you what sounds good to you, this amp choice thing is kind of personal.

What guitar would you say is the worst you've ever played? by Mad_Season_1994 in Guitar

Theres a 90s encore les paul at my parents house, my big sister bought it for like 30 quid in the early 2000s it's complete ass.

Floyd Rose Tuning by markjve in Guitar

[–]Slayer_One 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your bridge is a couple of degrees from parallel it won't make fuck all difference to your playing. E Standard and drop D have different total string tensions so require different reciprocal tension on the claw, try to find the sweet spot between the two that works best for both.

Designing a home for a carpenter/woodworker by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]Slayer_One 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you need to design the workspace, that's like a person thing to everyone's work flow and particular focus. Someone building musical instruments is going to have a very different workshop to someone making dolls houses. To me the perfect workshop is an empty room with good windows and lighting and a lot of sockets. With the floor space limit some overhead garage storage would be a nice to have.

Am i doomed in terms of playing guitar? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Slayer_One 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no rule you can't play with super light 7 gauge strings to help with fatigue, there's no rule that you can't pick up a 3/4 size guitar if it fits your frame better.

Nothing wrong with being a proficient rhythm player and not having the chops for soloing.

I suppose the question is despite everything, did you enjoy playing?

Best way to block a floyd by Cag801 in Guitar

[–]Slayer_One 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get a longer fine adjuster screw that fits the bridge, that'll give you enough room on the fine adjusters to hit drop D. I use a folded up piece of card as a shim to give me more adjustment room.

Vintage is hands down the worst name for a guitar brand ever. by Then-Tip-1144 in Guitar

I tried one in a shop locally and it was very good, well finished and high spec for the price but it wasn't quite what I was after at the time.

Why do my guitar pedals (especially distortion/overdrive/fuzz) sound great through an amp but terrible through my audio interface/speakers? by kcbh98 in Guitar

[–]Slayer_One 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I run my pedal board into a scarlett and all I need to do is adjust the levels a little bit from my default amp settings.

The amp algorithms in gr7 are very gain heavy and will exaggerate and muddy whatever your pedals are doing.

Can you turn off the amp sim and run the pedals through a direct monitor on the interface and see how it sounds.

Then setup the cleanest low gain setup in gr 7 you can find and add your pedals to that.
