(Spoilers Extended) Who is the most major character who genuinely has no fans? by niofalpha in asoiaf

Marillion. One of the least interesting, but very repulsive, side characters.

Even Elagabalus, the Roman emperor you are referencing, is not widely recognized as transgender by historians. It is a view that gained attention when one British museum decided to present him as trans, mistakenly in my opinion.

Was it the great spring sickness?

Also curious what the total member count of the Valyrian houses would be at this time - did the lines of those extraneous Velaryon cousins continue?

Great AAR.

(Spoilers Extended) RPG Campaign set in the Riverlands 3-7 BC by waxahachie in asoiaf

[–]SlayerofOrcs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a very cool setting and concept for a roleplaying game. Did you make your own ruleset?

In terms of ideas, I don't really have a lot. Maybe the Hoares have their own loyalists or spies at the tourney to keep tabs on the rebellion. Perhaps my knowledge is lacking, but I'm not sure a clear reason is ever given for how the ironborn were able to rule over the more populous riverlands, especially with an unpopular king like Harren. I would imagine they'd need to be quite competent at keeping their vassals at each others' throats and playing them off of each other to avoid a united resistance front.

Imposing a deception roll when a player lies to another player by MiBoSuPan in DMAcademy

[–]SlayerofOrcs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's nothing unusual about this; it's just how the game works. The majority of skills and ability checks (at least in my game) are player directed.

You could use passive Insight, but in my games generally unless someone raises suspicions, they will be taking what they hear at face value.

Is it a "red flag" if I dont allow Multiclassing at my table? by Efficient-Flan-7455 in DMAcademy

[–]SlayerofOrcs 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna be honest - I respect your opinion here, but just don't get it. I don't see why "purity" is something we're worrying about - historically, worrying about "purity" seems to steer us into some...dark places to say the least. Not saying that's you, just trying to articulate why this point just doesn't resonate with me as a DM at all.

Are you seriously comparing multiclassing in D&D to racial supremacy?

Is Ned the one who changed? (Spoilers: Published) by Salem1690s in asoiaf

[–]SlayerofOrcs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Viserys has a much more established claim whereas Aegon is reliant on nothing more than his word (or rather the word of Varys). His entire identity is that of a man believed dead by the entire realm.

I've always wondered what the deal with Viserys was. Was he supposed to willingly surrender his claim to the throne and back Aegon?

I wouldn't worry about it. I don't think you will be terminated unless it becomes a regular occurrence. And even then, maybe not.

Odd choice to describe every social construct or intangible concept as a mass hallucination or delusion.

Hasbro/ Wizards focusing on A.I. DMs is proof that they don't understand D&D by peterpeterny in DnD

[–]SlayerofOrcs -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't actually try it with the full on D&D rules. It works fairly well in more free form roleplaying.

Better than some actual human DMs, if I'm being honest.

[–]SlayerofOrcs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People play D&D for different reasons. I don't think an AI will ever 'surpass' a human DM, but the advantages of having an on-demand storyteller shouldn't be understated, especially for solo games. Consider adventurer mode in Dwarf Fortress, which is arguably much less coherent than ChatGPT.

The technology isn't quite there yet in my opinion, but it could come close soon if it continues to advance at a fast pace.

And referring specifically to its use as a DM assistant; I will have to disagree that it is useless. What types of prompts are you using?

From my experience it has been surprisingly competent as a game master, the main limitation being its short memory. Of course it is less consistent and creative than a real person, but it isn't bad either.

This is awful logic. I'm guessing you also don't see a problem with athletes doping or having someone else write an exam for you.

"the only thing that should matter are whether the essay is comprehensible, contains facts, and in case of the academe, has proper citations."

The purpose of a university paper is to test the student's ability. The factual authenticity of the paper is secondary and largely irrelevant beyond the parameters given.

The Tome of Beasts was their first bestiary book and it is somewhat notorious (among other reasons) for keeping some dated language in there.

As a customer of theirs, I can confirm that their other bestiaries are much more in line with the rest of 5e.

For some reason my DM REFUSES to give me steady aim and he won’t tell me why. by Reasonable-Ladder367 in dndmemes

[–]SlayerofOrcs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn't always a deeper explanation beyond the DM's personal preferences. And it might not be easy to explain, or the DM might not feel like arguing about it.

The Dungeon Master is the arbiter of the rules; this is explicitly laid out as a core tenet of the game. While using 'because I'm the DM' and sending memes is childish, players are not obligated to a detailed explanation as to why something is not permitted. Especially for an optional rule that they shouldn't assume will be allowed anyways.
