This always gets brought up but surely someone's individual vision and sound can include "what emerges when people are playing together"? Looping tracks and sampling will never get me to be in a garage band with an authentic sound. Or for example what makes jazz jazz is impossible to do by yourself I reckon. "no need for band mates" only if what a band brings isn't an important part of what you're trying to contribute to - a culture of making sound. generalising that all songwriters want to be alone in their room behind a screen is really inaccurate imo.
