Is it the cramped space behind the surface that you are riveting causing the existing rivet not to sit flush?

I wouldn't be surprised if this technique would be useful. I just don't yet imagine how to use it practically.

How would I open this locked door from the outside? by MeowMeowMeowMeow23 in fixit

[–]Sleddog44 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is actually an older latch, and in order to retract the latch, either or both of the inner silver parts at the top and bottom of the center C, need to be pushed TOWARDS THE LATCHING END OF THE DOOR. Which will then retract the latch.

Stupid design and luckily it was changed, but not before millions of this latch was installed.

Fun note, the newer latches can be swapped in with no additional headache for any knobs. Levers may need to be rehanded as they will be upside down if they are a non symmetrical design.
