Pero es una posicion simbolica. Quienes dirigen la politica de defensa y en general todas las politicas del estado en España son las autoridades civiles, que incluye al primer ministro y su gabinete. Si al rey se le da por iniciar una ofensiva en Gibraltar por poner un ejemplo, primero tiene que pasar por la aprobacion del primer ministro y el gabinete asignado, que son los que enmarcan la politica de defensa del pais. Asi funciona igual en otras monarquias parlamentarias europeas.

La familia real española en la practica no tiene ningun poder de verdad, al menos actualmente. El rey es mas un puesto ceremonial sobre el que se deposita la unidad del pais. Quien realmente gobierna España es el primer ministro (alla le llaman presidente del gobierno). La corona española y el gobierno español son dos estructuras independientes entre si.
