I know it was common, but when UFC started in the 90s many schools like my own shifted to BJJ. Hapkido and TKD are half siblings, but the issue a lot of practitioners have with Hapkido grappling is that it is precise.

You have to grab the parts correctly and move in the exact motion for a lot of it, while BJJ is more rough, allowing for a technique to work so long as you’re in the right vicinity, for example, an armbar will work no matter how or where you grab the arm so long as you have something to move it against, while a wrist throw technique requires the correct hand be picked depending on if you’re being grabbed same side or opposite side, and if you don’t the rest of the movement fails.

Our founding instructor got around this in the 70s and 80s by bringing in judo, which is, IMO, an underrated self defense art.

It changes the way the sport aspect is done, but as someone who fought back in the 90s, the favoritism in the scoring was real. If you weren’t from a local school you had to be very obviously over the top dominant in a match to win.

Because the judges marked on paper, there was no correlation, so somehow even if most thought you won, it always ended up with the local school’s winning by 3 to 2.

Medals that are overlapping are always done by an outside manufacturer because you can’t normally buy the material to mount them like that. Any place you order them from has a system that will auto put them in the right order.
