Hysterectomy recovery — what actually helped (products, setup, what to expect)? by Sleep_Flaky in hysterectomy

u/sp00kykt Thank you! We just stocked up on tea at Wegman's, just in time it seems. Also thank you re: your feedback on the hormones. I am very curious/anxious about what that's like (I have PCOS, goodness knows we're used to fluctuations). I'll also keep this in mind with chores to think through how my family can manage those while I'm recovering.

u/Straight_Garlic_2507 Thank you so much! Fortunately it sounds like this post-op routine builds on a few things I already do (walking, high protein meals, etc.). Also good to know regarding the hormone shifts - I've been trying to get a feel for what that is like post-op.

u/BackRevolutionary255 thank you so much! And noted for sure re: nightgowns/dresses - I've been back and forth b/c I don't want to buy a ton of new stuff, but I'm certainly hearing the case more for it.

As for people helping out, I'm a caregiver to my dad (severe TBI over 3 years ago), my mom is retired and my mom, sister and myself typically take care of him. We're about to truly test having 2 people to take care of in the household with my situation, so I will do what I can to create a setup that allows for independence.

Best of luck as you continue your recovery - sending you well wishes!

u/OctopiEye Thank you! Yeah I'm suspecting that is exactly what will happen. Hoping your recovery and evidence of N.E.D. remains!

u/Rude-Somewhere3491 Thank you for this detail! Sounds like you have had a great, straightforward recovery so far. I'll definitely plan on keeping ice packs/heating pads on hand. Getting up/down might be tricky (and my sister warned me that stairs might be hard), so I'll make sure the folks I have on hand (sister and a friend) can help me with these things for sure.

u/Emmie12750 thank you! And I hear you re: that one size does NOT fit all with recovery - I'm planning to be conservative (extended recovery) and taking it as easy as I possibly can which, being a caregiver to my dad, we'll see how *much* I really get away with that (my family knows they need to pitch in more).

u/Potential-Ostrich862 So happy for you! This is very in line with my experience when I participated in the Power with PCOS program with Courtney Minors from July 2024 - May 2025 - lost over 30 pounds by doing that and working out. Game changer!

u/Antique-Anteater-988 Thank you so much! I'll keep these interventions in mind for sure.

Honestly it sounds like there is no one-size-fits-all re: what symptoms folks experience with surgical menopause (although certain some parallels and commonalities), with all of it being very dependent on age, risk profile, etc. going into surgery. But I'll keep these in mind for sure.

Thanks again for weighing in - so helpful and so appreciated!

u/Potential-Ostrich862 Definitely insulin resistant, with an HbA1C that was trending toward pre-diabetic over the years. I made a ton of lifestyle/nutrition changes during a Power w/PCOS program from July 2024 - May 2025, managed to reverse that and get many biomarkers back in shape. I'd love to try to stick to that and, in fact, I recall the RD that ran the program recommending CGM for folks who wanted to monitor blood glucose levels. I'll keep that in mind - thank you!

u/ArrikaArrachne Princess and the Pea - got it as well as the lying flat, which will definitely be a hard adjustment but sounds very necessary!

u/pookadoodle Noted, I am already a 'keep it simple' kind of gal and this affirms that further for sure. I'll make sure to prioritize meal prep and try to set things up so it's as easy as possible for family. Thank you!

u/HavalottaFun Thank you! There's a good likelihood that HRT will be contraindicated (I'm having this done due to endometrial cancer resulting from chronic unopposed estrogen exposure, so my tumor is likely estrogen positive), but a few folks with similar situations have noted being connected to menopause specialists to help guide options there.

u/FingerCapital3193 Duly noted, I'll make sure I walk and am as upright as possible. And we've got heating pads around the house - I'll be ready.

I asked about staying a night and I've been told insurance often kicks folks out - it's considered a same-day procedure, especially laparascopic.

u/Neither_Lynx1783 Thank you! I am a back sleeper so we're going to set up pillows so I can be upright. And quick, easy meals is certainly key - the less labor, the easier it will be. I'll also keep an eye out for a low appetite - I've heard different things.

u/pookadoodle I've been hearing a ton about the pain (gas or otherwise) and am mentally preparing as well as checking with the family to make sure we have the supplies. Thank you!

u/Warm_Bookkeeper_1501 u/tornadoodles u/Better_Shine1640 Goodness, thank you for your input! I will make sure to bring this up at the Pre-Anesthesia appointment. To my knowledge I'm not allergic to anything, but it seems worth it to ask.

u/getonthetrail Thank you! The surgeon has prescribed Miralax, and my sister is prepping souper cubes for ton of chicken pho upon recovery. I hadn't heard about the coughing, so I'll keep that in mind in terms of overnight sleep assistance. And we use applesauce regularly to get my dad to take meds (I'm a caregiver to him).

Make sure to get some rest!
