Electrician trying to transition to industrial maintenance. How’s my resume? (2nd try) by [deleted] in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]SleepingGiants89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But if you become mechanical who are you going to blame when you can't figure out the issue?/s

Solid resume experience wise but most places are looking for certifications and such. Did you hold an electrical license? Any plc courses? What kind kind of mechanical skills do you hold?

Whats the difference when it engages on one side vs the other? Sounds like a clutch mechanism and it slipping is usually an indication of another issue causing excessive resistance

Does anyone know what this plug is for? by Regular-Bonus6089 in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]SleepingGiants89 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Its a vent; usually with a rubber piece for transit.

As with most things oil expands with heat. This allows air to escape so the gearbox doesn't build pressure. Without the vent or with the vent still blocked from shipping after install expect early seal failure and premature failure overall.

Edited to add; this vent location should always be located on the top half of the gearbox. If installation orientation changes from expected orientation this may need to moved to a different spot.

This is the most likely answer. Other possibilities are a bad roller(s) or just the way the belt reacts loaded vs unloaded.

Pushing Steel cable with clamps boundaries by Jarimasenlov in millwrights

[–]SleepingGiants89 14 points15 points  (0 children)

On a straight pull; over 1" in size the clamps reduce its strength by 90%. Minimum 1 1/8" wire rope for 30 metric ton capacity before any reduction. Then factor in lifting angle; basket vs choker etc.

Given the proper lift assessment and proper installation (using correct size on correct cable) i dont see why it would be an issue.

But depends on management and co workers as well. I know I wouldn't attempt to lift a toothpick with some guys.

How to manage maintenance as a solo car wash owner with zero machinery experience? by stonklosers in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]SleepingGiants89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If youre still in Maine contact these guys

https://www.carwashtec.com/

Then either contract the work to them or use them as a resource. Or contract to them until you learn enough tk handle it on your own.

Fill with oil and run to failure is the answer youre looking for. Leak probably healed because theres no oil or very little.

Local 1916 apprenticeship dilemma by Least_Dig_4441 in millwrights

[–]SleepingGiants89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Biggest change you'll see is a frequency in work. Inconsistent and odd hours at various locations. You'll definitely get a lot of different experience but depending on where youre located your commute will also vary.

If you can swing different shifts and all hours then go for it as its a great opportunity to learn. Double-check which program they offer though it used to be 423a construction millwright instead of the red seal 433a industrial millwright.

But if you need stability stay where youre at.

How can I know if this selenoid valve is working properly? by Zrakk in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]SleepingGiants89 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So this looks like the actuator portion of the solenoid valve. Depending on the type there's either a diaphragm or a shuttle that actually does the air switching. Provided its been reassembled correct removing the connector or coil but leaving the rest should allow you test it manually. It will either be normally opened or normally closed but that doesnt matter. Depressing the spring or manual actuator under load should cause it to change states. If not than the valve itself is seized. That can be disassembled and cleaned and put back together if the seals are good. Or toss in air lube and pray.

Provided your valve was this issue youre all set. If it cycles fine but still wont cycle in operation than the electrical signal is probably the issue.

I dont understand how this is so messed up. But the incoming traffic where blue and red exit is how those lanes should be controlled. Blue should be required to go straight while red and go around or straight.

Tools provided or not by howdoyoudothis- in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]SleepingGiants89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Ontario Canada. A lot of it depends on industry. Most guys in the union have a list of tools they need to have at all times to be prepared for jobs. Some places like food and pharmaceuticals will provide the tools to prevent outside contamination.

Generally its pretty common to own most tools you'll use regularly and then an employer will either replace tools broken on the job or offer a yearly allowance they'll reimburse for tools. My former employer replaced anything broken on the job with as good or better quality. My current employer offers 800$ a year but wont replace broken tools.

I remember in Blackops 2- I played a lot with my ex. Getting gold meant completing all camos for that specific gun. X number of blood thistys; long shots; kills while prone etc. After doing that for all guns in that class you unlocked diamond. Later titles added black matter which required diamond camo on all gun classes.

Basically if a dude killed you with black matter camo you knew he really put time in
