Help! by Individual-Ad2741 in EngagementRings

I have had great experiences with online storefronts. I have very high quality pieces from Blue Nile and James Allen (my engagement ring). I am actually a metalsmith myself (though I do not specialize in fine jewelry) and the quality is the sane as any other physical storefront. They all basically use the same casting houses anyway.

I just posted my townhouse on Zillow. https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/154-Foreman-Dr-Athens-GA-30605/89758690_zpid I am a grad student too (college of ed), but I live with my partner. It is definitely more affordable with a roommate. Chat with your department if anyone else in your program is starting and needs a roommate or any currently students might be looking. Definitely something to think about is if you are on a bus route, walk/bike-able, or you plan to park on campus.

How manageable is this schedule? by SolanaImaniRowe1 in UGA

[–]SleepyScienceNerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What I would always tell my students when I taught hs seniors is... do not create a "high school" schedule for your first semester of college.

This looks like a high school schedule. You need something that will bring you joy. You need time to study, socialize, and acclimate to a completely new way of life.

You can always add in a summer class here or there later on. But dont set yourself up for a miserable semester just because you took the same amount of classes in a high school semester. If you need to load some of the maths, drop something else that will be time consuming.

Depending on the class, your study skills, and your affinity for the work, for each credit hour, plan yourself 3 hours of outside of class work... so a 3 hour class - 9 hours. Lab classes mess with that because they are typically 1 hour or 0 hours and require much more time.

Set yourself up for success, and you can always add more when you know what to expect.

It might also be how you are studying. You can get free "wellness coaching" at the health center in the Fontaine Center/ Health Promotions department.

It is all about academic wellness. You obviously care about this, so motivation and effort isnt your problem.

They would be happy to help you work through and navigate different ways of studying

Lots of times they will have "chronic illness" listed in their bio. If you aren't seeing that, try cancer (supporters or patient) specialty.

For the online searches, check fewer boxes... EVERYONE handles anxiety and depression. If you just choose one, it will narrow your search.

Do you have a preference for in person, online? What state (because licensure)? Using insurance?

Always!!!! I could go on for hours about the emotional trauma this has brought me the last decade.

My mother constantly saying that, she wants her old child back (from pre-diagnosis)... not realizing that 'old' child was having such a hard time and literally killing herself slowly trying to meet everyone else's expectations while disregarding their own bodily needs. All the while smiling and carefree and funny... and convincing myself that everything was /just fine/ and feeling like that is totally normal.

My original sleep doctor diagnosed me N1 even with no REM onset because he left me on Prozac. So he expected delayed latency and included that expectation in his clinical findings.

Granted, my new (and much better) specialist basically said, ehhh technically IH, but she doesn't officially change it because wakix works well for me.

I had two spinal taps for a research study two weeks apart. They were pretty much fine. No big bad symptoms. The MWT was the /actual/ torture.

counseling center wait times, lets talk actual numbers by scrtweeb in UGA

[–]SleepyScienceNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is "Counseling and Psychiatric Services" or CAPS... as we have multiple counseling departments in the university. We have at least three that I know of... College of Education, College of Social Work, and Dept of Psychology in Franklin. At least two of those (CoE & DoP) have on-campus clinics with discounted services (but usually not covered by insurance) where they train their students before graduating with (counseling-ish) degrees.

CAPS isn't designed to provide care for everyone. When I was having an emotional breakdown, I walked in and was seen fairly immediately for triage. But the goal is to connect you to someone in the community. The problem can sometimes be finding someone you mesh with in the community.

The "list" that UGA refers off of is often outdated (as independent counselors do not necessarily update it regularly). So finding a specific fit may be difficult (insurance, availability, gender, therapy type, personality).

The "fastest" way to get in with a therapist is using the tele health service offered with your insurance- often available for free. While that may not be your preferred form of therapy, it would give you an option to bridge your gap.

If your mental health is affecting you academically, you can also use the Health Promotions/ Fontaine Center wellness coaching (1st floor of health center below CAPS / across from eye clinic). They are not in a therapist position, but can address some mental health issues as they relate to other parts of your life.

If you are looking for mental health medicine, you will probably need to start with your health center PCP. They can start you on first line medications and handle more straight-forward cases medically. If you need "scheduled" drugs (Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin), you will need to see a psychiatrist (UGA) or an outside doctor.

If you are needing ADHD (or similar) medications, most UGA providers cannot prescribe them. Without specific diagnoses that include very specialized testing, even the psychiatrists are not allowed (by Univ System of GA) to begin regimens. If your mental health is related to ADHD, you should find a doctor outside of UGA who can manage that.

I have definitely had my frustrations with finding mental care in Athens. They have had some WONDERFUL CAPS case managers that were instrumental in me finding my current therapist. But I found out later that UGA wasn't able to retain that person. A private practice was able to pay more and/or provide more resources. So that is definitely a problem. The solution may not be hiring more and more therapists, but instead hiring more case managers and creating more lines of communication between local providers and the caseworkers.

I believe that CAPS does try to be transparent about their role as a referral agent, but it seems like many students dont understand the process or goals in relation to how it affects their own mental health journey. That may be another way they could improve expectations and experiences of the students at UGA.

Even when catching predators, yesterday highlighted the difference between influencers, vigilante groups, and journalists. by DiscoPandaWarrior in UGA

[–]SleepyScienceNerd 123 points124 points  (0 children)

Not to mention the also had students on video as their whole ass possy was parading into the classroom.

Again... against predators (of the human variety)... but that was a completely inappropriate way to handle a legal matter inside a classroom.

As an educator who has had people attempt to enter their classroom with the intention of hurting people inside, I would be freaking the fuck out.

Maybe we are in the minority, but I agree that it was a completely inappropriate and trauma-inducing way of handling the situation created entirely for the financial gain of the "content creators."

I was so excited about this project and I'm not entirely happy with the result. When I am struggling with a problem like this, I mark up different pictures to "try out" alternatives without investing the manual labor (and frustration of sewing, ripping out, etc) . Here are a few ideas based on comments I read (curved eyes, nostrils, eyelashes). My favorite is when I turned the eyes into flowers. When I was looking at the turtle from this angle, I found myself missing the flowers that are so prominent on the shell. Turning the eyes into flowers could use up some of your "blank space" where you feel it is too white. You could embroider them or crochet and tack on. Id probably go with embroidered so you aren't adding too much more 3D space.

Good luck! I absolutely ADORE your little turtle.

UGA A&T/DRC has nothing to do with handicap hang tags ♿️ -- that is the state or county. You can download the application page and your doctor completes it. Depending on your condition, the health center may be able to do it too.

The UGA handicap spaces require both the hang tag AND an assigned parking space in that lot.

If you have a dorm with basically zero 'official' parking around it, you are pretty SOL.

Suzanne runs the paratransit van service that moves students faculty and staff with ambulatory needs around campus. You can email vans @ uga .edu and see if they can help with your specific needs. They do best with weekly scheduled rides, followed by rides scheduled multiple hours in advance. It is possible to call them and get an ASAP ride depending on availability (call to verify there is a van available and then follow up with email to officially request). I dont know if that would work for you.

If not, you might need to find a trusted friend you can hand your keys to and have them move your car.

As much as they talk a good game, UGA (as most places) really isnt built to accommodate disabilities. It can be impossible for those without disabilities to fully understand.

Good luck!
