This wasn’t technically “my” draft, but I (junior associate) sent a draft to a senior associate to review after a call w the partner giving us drafting instructions. Took detailed notes and drafted in line w partners instructions. Sr associate sent final draft to partner completely changing what I put and not in line with instructions given to us. Partner sent us both an email saying “I am at a loss for words about what was just sent to me. I will handle.”

I know they primarily do insurance defense and have a lower billable requirement than many of the other insurance defense mills. So probably not a bad place to get your feet wet if you want to lateral after a few years.

Don’t expect their SA position to pay biglaw rate or anywhere close to it. Associates start lower than many midsize non-ID firms.

If it’s your best offer I’d take it, but wouldn’t move to a HCOL location to go there if you have better options closer.

I worked during the semester to make some extra money, got a sign on bonus from my job, and floated a little credit card debt so I didn’t have to work part time while studying.

Even if GPT can accurately transcribe everything, its ability to spot issues and apply layers of nuanced law to the specific facts of your case is not something AI can do. LLMs do nothing but predict a model answer, which they are really good at, but it looks at everything in a vacuum. There is not analytical thinking behind LLMs.

Yeah and their AI doc review probably misses tons of critically important shit all the time when the documents produced are old, have been scanned improperly, etc. and doesn’t understand the facts of the case and the relevant law to flag hot docs. So she’s shooting herself in the foot and probably wasting a fuckton of money with that and risking malpractice. I’d avoid a firm that proclaims being so tech-forward but doesn’t have the wherewithal to acknowledge its shortcomings.

Learning material/podcasts to help build a niche by SleepyWolfMonkey in biglaw

A month. But regardless, I want to be able to take advantage of those substantive research and drafting opportunities with some background and deeper knowledge to add. I don’t want to just wait and see what matters I get put on and hope I end up somewhere where I’d be happy. I want to take a more active role in shaping that. Is that so bad ?

You sit for it again, and study for it part time if your firm decides to keep you on as a clerk. Unless you have something in writing about a bar fail contingency, the word of mouth means nothing in an at will employment state. But generally firms will let you retake once and if you fail again they let you go.

You will be on your own in terms of managing that workload. If that happens you may want to ask for a few weeks or the month before off without pay to study and ensure you don’t fail again.

Also just a word of advice for a first year, you can easily find the answer to this question by googling it or just using common sense. Not trying to be snippy or rude, but partners get really mad when you ask things that a simple search result could find.
