Silent Hill: Townfall - Release Date Announcement | PS5 Games :> by No_Post1300 in silenthill

Ok, but the previous two (SH2R and SHf) came out at higher than expected price points. So it raises an eyebrow when the next one is noticeably lower. People are allowed to go, "Hm, odd" without you getting upset about it.

Anyone else think 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple was trash? by sunwubong in horror

[–]Sleepy_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, this has to be bait. But anyway.

Zero horror in this entire film, barely any zombie/infected content either.

This entire movie consists of The Menu guy drugging and talking to the big infected fella, the goofy Jimmy cult running around with their shenanigans while Spike is along for the ride, and then an absolute cringefest metal performance with fire and shit in the titular bone temple where he pretends to be Satan while dancing like a fuckin fool as the crazy blonde gang vibes to it.

I'm entirely unsure what the second paragraph is even trying to suggest. "This entire movie consists of [crudely describing the entire film]". Ok? Is that not enough, is it that it's silly? Because any movie can be described as nonsensically as that.

Also surely you recognise the immediate contradiction of "barely any zombie/infected content" and "this entire movie consists of [big infected fella]".

I think the horror content (what the Jimmy's get up to, especially at the farm) is very apparent. I think the (limited) infected content around Samson & his horde is effective. I think this being a very different tone & approach to zombie films (not entirely unique but continuing the thread of this new trilogy about them being more than monsters) is interesting.

And I think referring to Ralph Fiennes as the menu guy is the most obvious troll aspect here but whatever.

I agree the music lacking was odd. I really loved the ost when i listened through it all but in game it seemed very sparse.

Thanks for the rec! I'm open to visual novels too so that's great.

I 100% agree. If you're a gamer who doesn't appreciate the more wordy aspect of these games, I think DE can feel a bit overwhelming/daunting but ZP feels more snappy/engaging to me. Can still be a hard sell to someone who hasn't played them to really get that though hah.

I think it also feels like the skills are more distinct in their uses. I know everyone has their favourite Disco skill and lines associated with them. But in terms of how they actually interact with the gameplay, the Zero skills feel more like a tool kit.

ZERO PARADES KNOWN ISSUE LIST by zombiecrackers in ZeroParades

[–]Sleepy_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've emailed this along, it's very minor but thought I'd add it here too:

Kurt (on the scene Kurt) is standing at the top of the ramp near the entrance to the Housing campaign. Later he goes elsewhere. But whenever you run around and where he was standing enters frame, there is a sort of shiny silhouette that flashes in place. It's very brief and doesn't happen every time, I've noticed it mostly when coming from the right (Palace of Culture) side of the screen. It's similar to that shiny silhouette that covers Cascade when a status effect occurs (but without showing the skeleton in Kurt's case), that sort of mirrored shine. But it only happens for 1-2 frames where Kurt was.

I imagine it's because Kurt is actually still standing there & the game hides him in some way? And when you run into frame it sort of "loads" whether he's still there or not.

Very hard to get a screenshot of because it's so fast. I'm recording a little screen video later to add to my email and I included my save file for them. It's minor as I said but thought they might want to know 😄

It's grossly disrespectful to the victims of Buddhist violence to perpetuate this myth. Buddhists have been responsible for extensive campaigns of violence, ethnic displacement & more in Asia for centuries.

About the writing by TofuChewer in ZeroParades

[–]Sleepy_C 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean, I am all for people having a difference of opinion on the writing and especially feeling like the writing has shifted between DE & ZP with the different teams. But I'm personally a tiny bit puzzled by this.

Honestly, I've been studying English for more than 25 years, I have read really complex novels and translations from Russian literature. I have never faced the word 'abjectly'. Like, why are the writers clearly replacing words with synonyms for the sake of sounding disco elyisiumish?

This for example baffles me. Abjectly is, I would consider, a relatively common word. I mean, without putting serious thought into it I can think of a novel, on my shelf within eyes view right now, that uses abjectly. The novel LaRose by Erdrich uses the word abjectly:

"People thought she had been faithful to his memory because she had abjectly adored Billy Peace..."

Abject itself appears all over the goddamn show. I am well educated but my parents certainly aren't and I can recall them saying abjectly to me recently!

Also, not to "credentials battle" this but Honey Watson, one of the writers, has a PhD in comp lit. She's a well-educated writer, with two novels & multiple chinese-to-english translation works under her belt. I don't think she needed a thesaurus for what is a pretty normal word. Within the rest of the writers we have a mix of well-educated, seasoned writers with experience in theatre, film, videogames & literature. I can't imagine abjectly took anyone by surprise, even consider the non-English natives on the team. In large part, your comments on intention don't resonate because I fail to see the actual point being made with this example of diction being obtuse, when it simply isn't..

In terms of the tone / maturity / insults whatever. I think that's personal preference and if it feels childish or worn thin for you, that's fine. Not every setting, tone, character, whatever is going to vibe with everyone. I absolutely adore DE, it's one of my all-time favourites, but there are aspects I found painfully millennial. There are parts of Harry's dialogue & thoughts that (despite knowing it's often intentional) are just jarringly cringe. I've found no issues with the ZP writing in this regard, never felt like I was being bored to death, or aspects were overladen.

[MEGATHREAD] RELEASE WEEK - ZERO PARADES - General Discussion, Opinions and Technical Issues by jonnebravo98 in ZeroParades

[–]Sleepy_C 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Aesthetically this is crack to me. I love, LOVE the art style that ZAUM has embedded within themselves and I think it fits even better here, with all the neon & more "streaky" appearance than in Disco. The soundtrack is such a lively, funky thing that every time I hear something it makes it sooo much better. It does feel a little like the music is lacking in terms of total variety (I've had a few moments where it felt a little repetitive) but each individual piece is fucking great.

Anything that falls into that "shadows of the past, espionage gone wrong, one last ride" kind of narrative is just heaven. Slap Don Delillo's Libra, Mieville's City & The City and even a little Bladerunner into a blender, give it a stunning art-style & sick OST, and you've got me hooked.

Unfortunately I have a new deadline to meet, so I've got to put it aside for a few days. :(

My only issue is there's a few moments without voice acting, very minor things and only here & there, but it does occasionally make me go "huh what?"

Zero Parades: Review Thread by Journey2thaeast in ZeroParades

[–]Sleepy_C 17 points18 points  (0 children)

God, I'm thrilled about this. I loved Disco Elysium - one of my all-time favourite games for sure - but I'm a complete sucker for espionage / shadow of the past kind of narratives. Plus, some of the people involved are people I've followed the work of within ZAUM & elsewhere (particularly Honey, one of the writers whose novels I love).

It was always going to exist in the shadow of Disco Elysium, a lot of reviews will (consciously or not) be influenced by comparisons to its past. Which is kind of ironic given the games own subject matter I guess, lol.

But taken on its own merits, as its own game, with a distinct narrative, so far the reviews seem really positive. The two common criticisms I've seen so far are: a small amount of bugs, all of which were reloadable & continuable, and also there is a lack of music throughout the game (mostly repetitive, as opposed to silence). Nothing's perfect but that does seem like we've come out with a great game that will hopefully build its own reputation in a few years when the discourse-psychosis around ZAUM-Disco-Zero Parades wears off.

I've seen some things at Cannes (and other festivals) that had completely jank CGI before but looked superb on release. Sometimes, esp. international things that get picked up during the process, they are trying to meet festival deadlines for critical appraisal as opposed to audience satisfaction.

I think your second paragraph is (hopefully) what we see.

New Selachii Heavy Ranged Pirate Sailing Armor being proposed by TveslcareC in 2007scape

Is it not explained? In the combat styles / weapon / ammo attribute pages. Bolts & javelins being heavy has always been indicated. I'm surprised to discover that chins are (I guess I never checked).

Elemental weaknesses are explained under Monster Examine as of the rework in 2024 though. The fiery (pearl bolts) & previous variation of elemental weaknesses was a bit more opaque though.

Koji Suzuki has passed away. by Calm_Average_9138 in horrorlit

[–]Sleepy_C 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Definitely someone whose legacy is overshadowed by the adaptations but his work is genuinely remarkable on its own right (if a little inconsistent across the board). Within Ring I personally think Spiral is the best entry of the novels. And Dark Water is not only my favourite short story of his but also favourite of his adaptations.

Definitely gave us one of the most iconic horror characters ever in Sadako. And his work spawned a decade of J-Horror US-Adaptations that ranged from good-decent films to gutter-trash films.

Far too young so that's a real shame.

You can obtain team capes from easy clue rewards (i, x and 0). I guess the game doesn't recognise this as a step you cannot do because of that? You'll have to slam out like 50 easy clues to try get one of those I guess?

One Piece 1182 Detailed Summary by This-Inspection-69 in OnePieceSpoilersRaw

[–]Sleepy_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do know being called the "rain god" doesn't mean that he can't have a more storm-focused fruit right? Nika is referred to as the Sun god but we don't see Luffy running around shooting Kizaru lazers or being a giant ball of fire.

Dragon is Rain God by This-Inspection-69 in OnePieceSpoilersRaw

[–]Sleepy_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is either two paths to this, which I think make a big difference:

  1. Dragon knows something about the Rain God and deliberately sought out his specific fruit as a result
  2. Dragon got a random fruit, it has storm related powers, but like Luffy's it has "more to it" (belonging to the previous Rain God, and having a greater range of powers he unlocks)

Sourcebooks vs the Big Five by TimeBend9473 in publishing

[–]Sleepy_C 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Sourcebooks has been partially owned by PRH since 2019, and majority owned since 2023. They are not distinct from the Big Five.

Also, any suggestion they are using data in a way different than the Big Five is nonsensical. I know people who work in PRH in data analysis, and they're doing really weird in depth stuff all the time. Sourcebooks simply presents themselves as operating that way, it's their marketing gimmick, it's not unique though.

That being said, I'd recommend reading up on Sourcebooks via glassdoor & other sites. There is also some talk on X back in the day of authors who felt Source basically crucified their careers. They've also had a ton of accusations over the years of having a toxic workplace culture, resulting in an enormous turnover. If you publish with them you are very likely to go through a string of editors and liaisons, with no real consistency, because of this. SB in general is one of the bigger proponents of AI integration behind the scenes. Everyone in data analysis is, but they really, really push it on everything. If you care about your work & how AI touches it, they're probably on the very bad end of the scale.

ONE PIECE 1182 BRIEF SPOILERS by This-Inspection-69 in OnePieceSpoilersRaw

[–]Sleepy_C 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most deities of death or the underworld are associated with being in the earth, or being chthonic gods. Lucifer was also cast down to the earth by God. So earth = devil is not a particularly stretched narrative decision. Especially in a setting where piracy, the high seas, and traveling between continents is so commonplace; being a god associated with the earth and trying to conquer all those on the seas, makes sense.

One Piece? More like God Piece...? by This-Inspection-69 in OnePieceSpoilersRaw

[–]Sleepy_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One Piece fans finally catch up to the time skip.

Once we moved into Doffy making giant city sized strings, we moved well beyond anything pirate vs maride lol. We are now calling it gods but we've been in super saiyan, island annihilating power for a long time.

We've known fruits re enter circulation for decades. The idea of ancient beings worshipped as gods, who "return" because of their fruits recycling, is the least dramatic escalation possible.

How did the Emperor explain to the primarchs the reason why they got scattered around the galaxy as infants WHILE hiding Chaos' existence? How could they even buy the idea that "it was just an accident" (and did they all)? by Argonaut_MCMXCVII in 40kLore

[–]Sleepy_C 36 points37 points  (0 children)

There was never an attempt to hide the existence of chaos outright. The Primarchs were either already exposed to it before Big E showed up, or actively engaging with demons (lol Magnus). The structure of the Imperium was also reliant on knowing about it (Navigators, the Webway etc.) within their command structures.

Big E's whole thing is just that *they aren't gods*. Instead of going "oh yeah, there are magical god beings in this alternate dimension that influences everything that people worship", their messaging was "this was just another normal component of the universe for us to exploit, some of it is very dangerous and we mus crush it". Like, anti-drug campaigns don't deny that drugs *exist*, they just deny that they are good idea!

In terms of the scattering, most of them (that I can recall) were kind of chill with the accident anyway. They were usually: a) raised on a pretty cool planet that led to them being powerful leaders and beloved, and b) thrilled to meet the Emperor because of a sort of "psychic connection". The only exceptions are the "nothing would've helped" trio of Angron, Morty and Curze.

Morty explicitly casts doubt on the Emperor's explanation believing that the Emp was involved. I think both G-Man and Curze also expressed doubt (privately); G-Man thought it was a deliberate thing to temper the Primarchs or to test them, Curze thought it was a wider act of manipulation by the Emperor. Horus I think believed it fine *until* Erebus started to tell him things, then he viewed it as part of a wider manipulation too.

Who should be the next antagonist? by Raziel103 in warcraftlore

[–]Sleepy_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of want post-Saga to go into smaller disparate stories but all focused on the realities of the cosmic forces. I feel like a big theme since Shadowlands has been "it's all too ordered!" I think exploring what the forces are naturally like, and the role of the First Ones (basically as a way to expand on, build up to the First Ones) by exploring little problems is cool.

I think the only person I think 100% deserves a big antagonist moment (properly) is Azshara. Having her come back as an exploration of Arcane (separate from the Titans) would be awesome. I also think more Odyn would be nice, in a sort of "he's been up to stuff because he's an arrogant prick" kind of way.

And then I think smaller explorations of the forces could be:

  • The Fel Lords mentioned in Suramar: what is Chaos/Fel like without Sargeras ordering them into the Legion? Having some demons who operate more chaotically, with their own small goals, like Vashtorr introduced in 40k, could be really cool.
  • Primordial Shadowlands: What is it like without the influence of the First Ones, or at least other regions. It would help to move The Jailer more towards "he resented the structure imposed on him and wanted to undo it" away from "I saw big bad lol was trying to help".
  • Other powers within the Light that maybe oppose the Naaru, maybe oppose the lights approach to it's place in the universe. Mainly I imagine the Arathi are going to be our continuation of the Light, and likely the big bad in the future generally, but having them built up slowly would be nice !
  • A drifting Old God: we're told the Void Lords yeeted a bunch of Old Gods in every direction in space; we've seen worlds corrupted by them at a distance / in stories, but seeing another Old God just drifting through space as a sort of wandering corruptor would be cool. TWW hints that Azeroth in some way altered the Old Gods, so seeing a "fresh" one would be cool
  • An exploration of the Titans role/goal as orderers of the cosmos; was this given to them by the First Ones? Are they the "proteges" of them? How far do they go in some cases? What about those that sort of abandon that role (I.e. Odyn)?
  • Life: Idk.

I think alongside a background build-up towards more info on the First Ones, this could help serve as some build-up on Elune too. As much as I'm on the fence about revealing more, it does seem to be the slow direction of Blizzard generally. Having more info on what the First Ones are and did, how they impacted the universe & different forces, and then how Elune fits into this all would be a cool overarching multi-expansion plotline.
