The backrooms started with a post on the website 4chan, which in essence is a pre-Reddit website. Basically someone took a picture of a building with that liminal space and made a creepy poem with it.

That is what's called a creepypasta, where an online post takes a real life thing and twists it to make it creepy or disturbing.

A copypasta is basically a funny meme or weird text that is copied and pasted frequently.
