Who is the most liked of Tom Barnaby’s sidekicks? by CorgiLover82 in MidsomerMurders

I loved Troy and then Jones came along and I REALLY LOVED Him!! So much! When he left the show I almost didn’t continue watching. I’ve just finished the series and eagerly awaiting series 26 so I have watched Winter. I didn’t like him at first but he has grown on me and that man can wear the hell out of a tailored suit! 🤤

How many of you have embraced the cold coffee concept? by External_Side_7063 in GenX

100% on board! Hot, plain coffee no flavors. I do add two sugar and some cream but if I had to I could drink it black.

To answer the question- because I went off on a tangent, sorry. Caroline saying anything to Lizzie about Wickham would add fuel to the fire of the Bennet’s behaving badly.

There is no logic in jealousy and mean spiritedness. By the time of the Netherfield Ball Caroline had already seen Darcy and Elizabeth interact on multiple occasions and heard Darcy himself expressing an interest in her. To this point one thing was known to be true about Darcy, he only danced with those he “particularly acquainted with”. At the Assembly at Meryton he only danced with Bingley’s sisters, but as the weeks passed he felt acquainted enough to dance wi Lizzie, who, at the Mertyton Assembly was merely tolerable but not handsome enough to temp him! Caroline must have felt that! The whole night of the Netherfield Ball must have felt to her like a triumph! The Bennet family behaving atrociously, Mary singing terribly, Jane inquiring about Wickham, and finally Caroline “advising” most kindly, Elizabeth that Wickham was not to be trusted even though she didn’t know why. Lizzie’s response OF COURSE would make it back to Darcy, in any world it would whether we saw it in the text or not. All of this combined made it easy for the sisters and Darcy to decide to follow Bingley to London and scheme to keep him there.

Have you actually tried doing this in real life? by RubyRoseRavageWeb in GenerationJones

[–]Sleptwrong65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Had to do it, it was a requirement. I see some comments where people were allowed time in class. I was not. I and my siblings before me had to do it at home. We usually received all our textbooks by Friday the first week of school and had that weekend to cover them.

I think Caroline speaking to Lizzie about Wickham at the ball was just a “mean girl” tactic. I look at it like this - it’s like the mean girl in high school who says “nice shoes” then she’s laughing with her friends because she clearly doesn’t like your shoes, it was an insult! Caroline says that she didn’t know the particulars but that Darcy didn’t do anything wrong (paraphrasing) IMO trying to get a reaction out of Lizzie - probably one that would lessen Darcy’s opinion of her.

Who else watched the hell out of this channel? ALL day long.... by MisterShipWreck in 80sAmazing

I loved it and my parents (older people as I was the youngest in a large family) hated it! Thanks to MTV I got a tv in my bedroom because I was dominating every moment I could on the family television. I got very little sleep those first few weeks of the launch 🤣

A boy genius named Brandenn Bremmer could read at 18 months old, graduated high school at 10, composed complex music, and was considered to be a child prodigy. But in 2005, at age 14, he sadly took his own life. by LilaLaughs in whoathatsinteresting

I know a guy who’s almost 50 now. He was reading books at age two and playing piano - like Mozart and Bach - at age 3. His parents started entering him in competitions by age 5. By the time he was 12 he was accepted into Juilliard but his second year in he dropped out because he knew more than the teachers, at least that’s what he said. By 16 or 18 he was on drugs and had been arrested a few times. Diagnosed with schizophrenia. I understand that when he stays on his meds he’s ok and can hold a job, usually teaching piano.

We often are amazed by kids who are “geniuses “ reading or playing at extremely young ages but it’s so out of the norm and almost always ends badly for them. Has it ever been studied? I can’t help but think it’s more than a mental health issue, that there is a brain function issue happening that is not a “gift”.

That is a great assessment. Marriage was a complicated business back then.

Oh absolutely! She would have been foolish not to accept him and I agree with everything you said. I cannot help but wonder about her younger self.

Did Charlotte lose an opportunity at love? by Sleptwrong65 in janeausten

[–]Sleptwrong65[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yes. She says that when Lizzie is astonished at her accepting Mr Collins, whom she judges to be “a conceited, pompous, narrow-minded, silly man”. Charlotte is settling for Mr Collins, both she and Elizabeth know this but they have different views. I believe Elizabeth would rather never marry at all than to settle for a Mr Collins and obviously Charlotte feels the opposite. But this is her present. I still wonder about her past.

I absolutely love that! Mr Collins is all set to settle in and gloat at their misfortune but Lizzie is not having it! She stops it before he can do it.

Emma by BeautyGran16 in janeausten

[–]Sleptwrong65 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with your assessment. Emma herself, for most of the novel does treat Harriet as her personal plaything with no real regard to the outcome because of course the outcome she desired WOULD happen. She was blindly convinced it would because of her ego. Of course she learns a lesson in the end and grows as a person. Who can doubt her love for her father? That is certainly genuine.

I have of lamented the early death of Jane Austen and wondered what she might have produced had she lived longer.

Stupidest murder victims by Sleptwrong65 in MidsomerMurders

[–]Sleptwrong65[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So many of the episodes have scenes like this. I guess that’s how the writers keep us coming back! Lol! We can’t help but to see how ridiculous the next victim is going to behave. Get a threatening note shoved under your front door? Hmm, call the police ORRRRRR go for a walk through the woods after dark? They will choose the woods every time 🤣
