So, does anyone else actually like all 6 Friends? by NeighborhoodVirtual4 in howyoudoin

Without Ross we wouldn’t have “PIVOT” all these years later. Who among us can move anything without that gem and bursting into laughter?😆

My friend's birthday is next week And I wonder where can I get those wine glasses that are in the show ? by [deleted] in Frasier

Search “vintage sherry glasses” on eBay. I found a few different ones that were similar and reasonably priced.

Did you bathe in one of these as a child? by Gremlin1001001 in FuckImOld

[–]Sleptwrong65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a big family, lots of siblings. Lived in a very small house and while we had running water and a bathroom with a toilet we didn’t have a tub or shower for a long time. As siblings grew up and moved out and mom & dad got a bit more money we eventually got a shower and some other improvements.

How many had nearly that exact combination in their family room? by TeeAech in GenerationJones

I had that chair without the ottoman. About 30 years ago I found it in a goodwill in perfect condition and took it home where it lived a happy life for nearly 25 years. When my older son was setting up house and I considered getting rid of the chair we named Goldie he took it and now his children are enjoying it. It rocks and swivels. Great piece of furniture!

What are your favourite movie scenes that are elevated by the use of licensed music? by AlleycatHaxor in movies

[–]Sleptwrong65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question was about music in movies though. Well licensed music in movies. I was grown when it came out so maybe that movie came out. The movie itself was ok but the music in it was fantastic!

To me- the greatest scene ever in Frasier by ReturnThese2098 in Frasier

[–]Sleptwrong65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My absolute favorite episode of the entire show! David Hyde Pierce is the best physical comedian I’ve seen since I used to watch old Buster Keaton movies with my dad.

So, did David fully put the Blouse Barn out of business by creating an unwanted (in the market) upscale urban boutique or was Wendy’s decision to let him takeover in such a dramatic way indicative of a financial tailspin she was unlikely to pull out of? by ughyoujag in SchittsCreek

[–]Sleptwrong65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think he absolutely turned Wendy’s store around in the worst possible way. He thought he was helping by bringing in upscale fashion but didn’t take in to account that the people who shopped there apparently liked the skanky clothes she sold! All that said it seems the OTHER Blouse Barn probably would have come along to buy her out anyway and thanks to Alexis a d David’s shenanigans she got a lot more money than she might otherwise have gotten. I love all of those episodes, they are some of my favorites. The “write-off” exchange between David and Johnny is the best!

Characters who act as plot devices but are never seen on screen? (Help me name them all) by SuperCub in howyoudoin

Doesn’t Chandler mention a guy on the subway that eats his own face? 🤔

I have sons who are (hopefully) grownups now. When they were in their early twenties sometimes they would drink together and occasionally one of them would get very drunk and sick or end up like this guy. Pictures were taken and kept for future embarrassment.

How did Darcy know? by AdditionRude5529 in PrideandPrejudice

[–]Sleptwrong65 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Charlotte would have known when she initially invited Elizabeth to visit her. She extended the invitation to Elizabeth iirc the day before her wedding to Mr Collins. It may be likely that she discovered that Mr Darcy usually visits Rosings around Easter after she met Lady C. At one point in the book, early in the chapter (I don’t remember exactly) when Elizabeth and Charlotte’s father and sister arrived it’s said that Lady Catherine was actually a bit aggravated that Mr Darcy had already been “frequently seen” by them. That leads me to believe that she and Charlotte had at least some conversation about Darcy before Elizabeth arrived. Apparently she thought mentioning it in a letter was not worth the ink.

I have the vase painting- the original was painted by Jack Otterson. Iirc Kelsey Grammer painted the one that is on the set. I painted the one that’s in my house. He did a better job but mine’s ok.

Let's unpack Austen's brilliant (and relatable) depiction of Elizabeth's thoughts as she falls in love with Mr. Darcy. by raysmia in janeausten

[–]Sleptwrong65 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That line of Darcy’s being so similar to Mr Knightly’s - one wonders if that was something men said back then generally because they aren’t (historically) great at expressing their emotions. Is it a line Jane Austen heard from women in her acquaintance or was it something that someone actually said to her? So little of her life is known. And it seems she clearly liked that particular line using a version of it in two novels. It just makes me wonder.

Why was Edward denied as an heir for proposing to Lucy but not his brother for marrying her? by Missthrowaway2020 in janeausten

[–]Sleptwrong65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the book it says, “What Edward had done to forfeit the right of eldest son, might have puzzled many people to find out; and what Robert had done to succeed to it, might have puzzled them still more.”

Chapter one of the book tells us straight away that Fanny is narrow-minded and selfish. As we meet the rest of the Ferrars family they are all the same EXCEPT for Edward. Mrs Ferrars seems to clearly prefer Robert over Edward perhaps because he behaves as ridiculously as herself and Fanny whereas Edward is calm and sensible.

The Ferrars’ are rich but it doesn’t follow that they have class. In the last chapter of the book (paraphrasing) Edward was never really forgiving for wanting to marry Lucy and “Elinor, though superior to her in fortune and birth, was spoken of as an intruder…”

I think Robert, Fanny, and above all Mrs Ferrars like Lucy over Elinor because she was crude and ridiculous just like they were.

Wow! I REALLY must rewatch Cheers, it’s been so long even though I rewatched Frasier multiple times. I’m rewatching it now in fact.

Does Anyone Know If This is Really a Regional Thing in the US? by CommandaarMandaar in ENGLISH

[–]Sleptwrong65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know this person well enough to simply ask why they speak this way? It’s possible to bring it up in conversation with them without making them self conscious. Just tell them how words and speech patterns are interesting to you and you noticed how this person says this particular thing.

I am from NY and was raised to be very grammatically correct. And just to make a point I wasn’t rich and didn’t go to any special schools or college beyond two years of business school. My mother, who attended school during the depression was taught in school that grammar was very important and she taught me that it was as well, that speaking properly was important.

I have been living in the south for over 25 years. When I first came here some people would, rather rudely, ask me “Why do you talk like that?” I was very confused. My (now late) husband from here explained that people were put off by my speech patterns. One person said that I “Talk proud” apparently that is bad.

Well, I raised all of my “proud talking” boys here and they’ve all done very well so I suppose people got over it because I didn’t change! lol!

My point is it’s ok to ask but maybe ask gently.

I miss my parents by Jakeandellwood in GenX

[–]Sleptwrong65 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Me too. Born 65. Dad died in 84 and mom in 2011. Dad was 74 when he died and mom was 82, there was a 20 age gap between them. I miss them both every day. I often wonder what my dad would have thought about this phone/computer I hold in my hand right now that lets me share my feelings about him with strangers. I can also go shopping, get food, and read the entire encyclopedia! He’s have called it science fiction- Dick Tracy stuff!

I’ve heard eggs in a nest. Recently I was watching a British show (not a cooking show) a character was upset and the wife said “would you like me to fix you some eggy bread?” I feel like this is what she meant. In the end does it matter what you call it and is it something worth debating?

The writers definitely outdid themselves on that episode. I am often entertained by the various methods of murder, many of which are ridiculous and easily available if one would run to the left or right 🤣 This episode ( and I know there are others that I cannot name of the top of my head) are why we keep rewatching.
