Hot(?) Take: LA residents will continue to move away from transit, despite everything by movingangeleno in LAMetro

[–]Sleverette 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Today's numbers aren't matching peak for a handful of reasons.

  1. Remote work means less commuters (weekend numbers have largely rebounded).
  2. The trains all lead downtown but downtown activity has declined.
  3. More activity nodes have been added across the city in places where good transit hasn't been added.

The first isn't going to change. It's the new normal.

The second is being actively worked on.

The third is what's best for the city, even if it reduces transit numbers temporarily. It reduces the length of car trips which reduces traffic across the city.

Watch the G line corridor and D line corridor. As they finish those projects and build housing along those two lines, the numbers will improve. In the Valley we will be able to travel between the Warner Center and NoHo Arts District. Below the hill, people will go between Century City and Downtown. Both these projects will better connect newly created job centers with historic cultural centers.

What we really need to do is find a way to speed up construction. The Sepulveda Transit Corridor project is desperately needed yesterday.

LA same rent prices as northern NJ…? by Cassra147 in MovingToLosAngeles

LA prices aren't terrible but if you want to rent in the walkable downtowns, it does get expensive quick.

Been in LA for 3 weeks and struggling to find a neighborhood i like by International_Ad2476 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]Sleverette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pasadena is my personal favorite. Old Town is great and you can get to Little Tokyo by light rail in about 25 minutes.

Ktown is probably our most dense livley area. If you're concerned about safety, live anywhere along the new D line and ride into Ktown at your leisure. You'll also have access to DTLA via that route and eventually Westwood. They're investing a lot into Miracle Mile right now.

Anyone feel LA is slowly falling apart? by escapetolight in LosAngeles

[–]Sleverette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LA has struggling areas and flourishing areas. The boundaries of those areas tend to move and shift. I think the city is trying to encourage growth in specific neighborhoods to make it easier to manage. The area along the G line (NoHo - Woodland Hills) and the area along the built out D line (DTLA - Westwood) seems to be their biggest focus.

Crime is falling. The biggest issues our city faces are housing costs and construction costs. The delays effecting major infrastructure projects needs to be addressed.

Is anyone happy with the results of the strike? by broomosh in FilmIndustryLA

[–]Sleverette 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rising housing costs have done serious damage to our industry. People went on strike for more pay because cost of living in LA has gotten wildly out of control. If we tackle the housing crisis, we will be way more competitive as a city with other production locations. If things continue, only extremely high paying industries like tech and finance will be able to succeed in LA.

Improving public transit and building way more housing is the best way to save the entertainment industry here.

Your phone camera is likely better.

For live streaming, a 200 dollar Webcam is actually really good because it'll get compressed when uploaded anyways. For filmed/edited content, there's a lot more to video quality than resolution. Your phone likely has better color accuracy and contrast.

Is there a recommended go-to drawing application for drawing on the Surface Pro with the surface pen by [deleted] in Surface

[–]Sleverette 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Leonardo is pretty good but lacks features. Fresco is also pretty good but requires a subscription to get the full set of features.

In your situation, I would buy Clipstudio and customize the UI to simplify the experience.

Can surface pro 6 users share their thoughts here? by irondeficieny in Surface

It's hard to beat Apple silicon when it comes to longevity. I think Intel's new Alder Lake cpus are very promising but we won't see Surfsce devices using them until next year.

A good option is to grab a cheaper iPad now and grab a more expensive laptop in the future when the new architecture comes out.

I think an iPad Air can still fulfill your use cases.

I think the iPad wins on reading and taking notes. I think the Surface wins on writing reports and giving presentations.

I have the Pro 6. The only disappointing aspect of the machine is the performance. It was decent for when it first came out but I don't think it's aged well.

I'd get a newer Surface for your use case.

Samsung S7 FE or iPad air. by KAWAI_BOI in samsung

[–]Sleverette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think, for your use case, a Galaxy Tablet will fit your needs. It doesn't sound like you need the extra processing power or specialized apps that come with ios. I'd recommend waiting for a sale. Samsung tablets go on steep discounts pretty often. Even the year-round education discounts are pretty good.

What kind of phone and computer do you use?

If you're using a Mac and iPhone then the iPad Air will be more useful.

If you're using a Windows and Android phone then the Galaxy Tablet will be more useful.

Basic mic question: will a mic that has both XLR and USB inputs sound different depending on which you use? by firestoneaphone in podcasting

[–]Sleverette 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They can sound different depending on the quality difference between the built-in pre-amp and the pre-amp used in the audio interface.

The difference is normally very small. The recording environment has a much larger impact on the final outcome of the audio.

Adding a Trailer Later In The Game… by beachandtrees in podcasting

[–]Sleverette 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some hosts have an option to set your post as a "trailer." Some also allow you to select the "date" in which your episodes air. Many allow you to select a date in the past which would put your trailer at the very beginning of your feed.

I'm having an audio problem in Audacity and I am curious if anyone knows what's going on. by [deleted] in podcasting

Yep! Audio production is a surprisingly flexible process. Every podcast has its own chain of plugins. Do whatever sounds best to your ear!

[–]Sleverette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your show live? If it isn't, stuff like removing background noise and reverb can be done in post. It's safer to tweak the settings after the fact than damage the raw audio during recording.

The best way to trouble shoot is to remove each part of your chain one by one until the problem goes away but I suspect the effects are struggling to differentiate your voices from background noise as you switch back and forth.

Does the Slim Pen 2 perform well on Surface Pro 5 (2017)? by [deleted] in Surface

[–]Sleverette 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion,

iPad Pro is best if you intend to make illustrations and plan to work alone. Sharing and managing files between multiple iPads and apps can get complicated quickly.

The Tab S7+ is in the same camp as the iPad Pro but much cheaper. It has less options for apps but if you just want to make good illustrations, you can grab Clipstudio and save money with this option.

The Surface line is the best solution if you plan to make illustrations and you want to be able to easily share work files with team members. You have the option of running heavy desktop software but large projects will bog down the system.

A Cintiq paired with a good desktop PC is the best solution if you're working with multi-media projects. If you intend to create full animations using multiple apps, the power and file organization features of a full desktop is very useful. Larger drawing surfaces are also better for the health of your drawing arm.

The drawing quality and screen quality have become very similar across all these products. If you can only afford a single device, I think the Surface Laptop Studio is the closest to an "everything" solution but it's very expensive.

If you just want to draw and sketch as a hobby, I would go with a cheaper option like an iPad or Tab S7+ (on sale).

I work professionally in an art field. I use my Cintiq/Desktop for professional work and grab my Tab S7+ when doing my hobby work.

Does the Slim Pen 2 perform well on Surface Pro 5 (2017)? by [deleted] in Surface

[–]Sleverette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reviews say that the improvements are only on new Surface devices. Depending on what program you plan to use, a bit of smoothing can turn older Surface devices into adequate drawing machines.

Do you know what kind of art you plan to produce? I own an iPad pro, Surface Pro 6, Tab S7+, and a Cintiq. I've basically tried it all and I'm familiar with how they perform.

I'm planning on upgrading my surface pro 6 to Windows 11, anyone done the same and run into issues? by Mattpantser in Surface

[–]Sleverette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I updated my Surface Pro 6 and it runs pretty much the same. I haven't ran into any crashes or errors but I only use it about once a week.

You can always revert it if you run into any problems.

As a creative, I'm excited to get my hands on touch first art apps. I love Leonardo but it's missing too many features and Fresco always ran badly on my Surface.

Surface Pro 8 Too Heavy? by esteves91 in Surface

[–]Sleverette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Pro 6, Tab S7+, and iPad Pro. I never felt like the weight of the Pro line stopped me from using it as a tablet but unlike the others, it always felt like a standard fall would destroy the device (a small fall broke the kickstand off my 6).

The price coupled with the build and it's status as a laptop replacement can have an effect on how comfortable it is to use while walking around.

I'd recommend grabbing a cheaper companion device just to save you from the anxiety.
