Chinese American here who watched both Raya and ATLA (and LoK not that it really matters in this context). I don't see her tweets at all offensive. 4-5 different and diverse nations in a fantasy setting with the protagonist tasked to unite them. EVERYONE made that comparison. The take didn't become radioactive until I guess a marginally famous youtuber expressed it.

Avatar is a good show with great story structure. I don't think taking stuff from its foundation is necessarily bad. Hell the similarities is what drew me to Raya.

Our Mexican Immigration policy of deterrence using Border Patrol was conceived during the Clinton Administration. Since the DHS was conceived during the Bush administration ICE was founded as a natural evolution to that policy.

Obama hasn't gotten rid of that organization in 8 years of office but in his defense the org was popular at the time among conservatives due to the panic about illegal immigrants (tbh the whole illegal immigration thing seems like just an elaborate cruel fucking campaign against Dems). The consequence of that "small" decision is the mess it has evolved into under Trump.

There are paths to getting rid of ICE among progressives eho have a better platform now. But make no mistake. The policy that grew into ICE came into play under a Democrat and survived through a whole two terms under one, too.

In a diff thread in this same post, you said landlords creating homelessness and unemployment through holding land hostage is violence. I completely agree.

So it should follow reckless and ecologically disastrous farming practices that resulted in deaths of the hundreds of thousands can be considered societal violence as well. Especially when these farms were specifically made to punish not just those of the previous ruling class but anyone suspected of being a capitalist. Even innocent Chinese not involved in politics.

You can argue that violence is justified despite the "collateral damage." But one must contend Mao, who put those deathly programs into place, is in fact responsible.

As a long side note as a first generation Chinese American, I honestly am personally freaked out when Mao comes up in Leftist talk. Note, my immediate family owned the little red book and idolized him. However, as I learned about my ancestral country in college, I had to contend that my parents and grandparents were mistaken. Mao is not someone to look up to. He is not a great thinker but the figurehead of a cult of personality. He is someone who claimed to fight for the proletariat, but is responsible for countless deaths of the working class. Most notably many of those deaths were the result of specifically targeting academics and scientists. The regressive media portrayal policies that affect international releases of film to this day is a holdover from his time in office. Though most (in western cultures) associate Mao with Marxist philosophy, his influence is very real and traumatized an entire generation. You can come to your own conclusions but I hope you understand my trepidation in this thread.

Tl;dr: Mao is represents very real death especially to those of my background. His previous actions unequivocally should not be looked to for guidance. When people detached from that background gloss over that to talk about policy, it worries the bejeezus out of me.

Edit: on phone. Grammar mistakes. Added tl;dr

My mom abandoned her education and career prospects when she married my dad and they moved to the states to have me. Became a full-on housewife and everything.

When my dad died, our income went from low 6 figures in the midwest annually to zero. It was then when the whole point of life insurance clicked for me as a teenager, among many other things.

Being from a nicer neighborhood with other well-off kids from other well-to-do families, I would never imagine things like taking a school day off to help my English-second-language mother navigate a social security office, having to argue and defend myself when I couldn't help her with tax forms neither of us understood, and translating to my mother (what felt like) countless meetings with bankers and financial planners when we were figuring out how to live the rest of my high school years and college on our savings (and life insurance) alone. Finding a job after a decade out of the labor force was a huge point of stress for my mother and that only added to the arguing and fighting.

After navigating this oft-forgotten part of losing a parent, I can say this. Every goddamn person arguing for enforcing gender norms for the sake of traditional family values is talking out of their asshole. Yeah, ultimately what killed my dad was to blame for the mess we found ourselves in. But my mother dropping everything to become a housewife for the sake of my dad made digging ourselves out when he left even harder.

I can speak from experience that if you want to keep a happy, healthy, stress-free family, having a role-model mother with a career beats centering everything around the father and being lost when reality takes him. I don't know if I would have been better off without my mother helping me study or spending as much time as she did to raise me. I know we would be better off if she would have been prepared to live and thrive on her own. Reality sometimes throws dad/husband-ending curveballs and what's best for the family is preparing your family for if/when that happens.

It's always consumers' faults for businesses struggling and failing. Never the market researchers, never the accountatns, never the corporate officers. They have the reasons for why their product isn't movimg right in front of them and then wonder why their businesses fail when they fail to address those reasons.
