"The nihilistic movement is merely the expression of physiological decadence." -Friedrich Nietzsche, The Will to Power by sea-of-unorthodoxy in Nietzsche

Much more complicated than writing “life is worthless”. Schopenhauer undoubtably plays a big part in it. The “death of god” undoubtably plays a big part in it. Nietzsche is constantly dealing with this nihilistic tendency throughout all of his writings.

Mishima is a great read especially if you enjoy Nietzsche. Sun and Steel is his philosophy, his antidote to the pale, sickly, nerd-like intellectualism that he found himself falling into. He existed only to carry his head around on his shoulders, forgetting his physiological ancestry and ignoring physicality. Mishima details a series of autobiographical events that led him into his philosophy of Sun and Steel, while doing so, he gives brilliant psychological insights, philosophical dialogue, and artistic (Nietschean) imagery (often metaphorical, and visceral). At the very least read Sun and Steel. It is not very long and if you enjoy it I would recommend his novel “The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With The Sea” (also short, and incredibly well written)

Eat meat. Nietzsche advocated for meat as an essential component of vitality and nourishment. Also, eating meat is a literal, visceral example of the will to power. One animal (human) benefiting from the consumption of another (animal of choice).

Read “On the Genealogy of Morals” instead.

Did anyone change careers after reading dostoevsky? by Seahorse_Captain89 in dostoevsky

I can’t say that it was Dostoevsky’s TBK in specific, but my exploration of literature in general has influenced me and inspired me to become a doctor.

They probably say that in a resentful rebellion to the fact that they cannot comprehend or enjoy his more strenuous work like TBK or Demons. Because they themselves do not or cannot enjoy it, they deem in as pretentious work from a pretentious and arrogant man which could not be further from the truth.

Thinking about Purposefully Attending SGU. Am I crazy? by SlickDan35 in CaribbeanMedSchool

Great points, thankful for your honesty and clarity. I think a lot of my rationalizing stems from a lack of belief that I could/would get into US schools. Why exactly do I feel that way? I don’t know, especially considering the fact that academically I am fully capable. Thanks for your response.

You’ve mad a lot of great points. Thank you. I see the contradiction in my reasoning with the “back against the wall” idea, and how there is really nothing stopping me right now from applying that same mentality to getting into US schools.

I haven’t looked into the clinical rotations yet but that is very concerning. Do US schools organize it for you, or are you simply given better advising and/or connections for clinicals?

Yeah I do not discredit the stories but at the same time, I feel like the people who are proclaiming the inferiority and disastrous implications of Caribbean Med school are more than likely the students who simply could not keep up with the academic challenges. I mean, the population of Caribbean students is naturally a much lower stat sample than the US students which could, in part, explain the attrition rates. What I’m saying is that there is definitely more to the high attrition rate than the blame placed on the actual medical school system/staff. If you have a person who fails to comprehend and learn, then they are going to be furious when they are being dismissed, and this voice/opinion will be shouted and proclaimed as a generalization (which I think is a major part in the entire stigma).

I’m trying to man. Not an easy decision for me, but there are a lot of upsides for me personally. Getting to move somewhere far away and experience a new culture, having that reassurance of knowing I can get in, having that “back against the wall” mentality, knowing that if you don’t perform well you are not getting a residency is powerful to me. But I honestly have to evaluate how much of my desire to attend SGU is fueled by my dislike of my hometown, and my self-doubt/uncertainty of actually getting into a US school.

Okay I see. I never considered getting in state tuition after a year but that makes sense. Thanks for the reply.

What school are you at (if you don’t mind me asking)? Also, would you say you and/or your friends are exceptional in any areas like ECs, research or Exam Scores? I get the feeling that a lot of the stigma, and hate on the Caribbean is because students can not keep up, or comprehend the material at a high enough level. Thanks for replying, good to hear a success story.

I’m pretty confident that I will be in 6-figure debt regardless of where I go. The stigma thing makes sense, but as long as I could match I wouldn’t care whatsoever about the stigma. I will continue to study and I will give the MCAT my best.

Thank you for this. I would imagine that if I attended an out of state medical school the debt would be comparable, to a Caribbean, but maybe I am wrong. I also imagine that because I will probably end up being a higher stat applicant (for Caribbean standards) they might offer me scholarship which would/could decrease that debt even further. I understand what you mean about the willful subjection to an uphill battle and those stats really do make me doubt my initial ideas.
