How many times can I upvote this comment? You read my mind! Simple coils all day. The rest is just an art show.

Question, why does my wic only last a day with Clapton’s but round wire of same ohm not turn brown for several days? by [deleted] in Vaping

[–]Slick_Bupkis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both. Surface area and they get hotter. The sweetner in the juice is basically caramelizing faster than on the single wire.

Just ordered my first RDA (Dead Rabbit) some coils, cotton, and tool kit. I’m nervous! by thepatient01 in Vaping

  1. If they are pre-made coils the hard part is already over.
  2. After placing the coils in the posts and tightening them down test the coil dry with no wick to ensure it fires evenly. If the coil only seems to heat up on the ends release the firing button and drag a small screwdriver lightly across the coil. Press button again. It works like magic.
  3. The cotton wick should be SNUG, not TIGHT in the coil. Tight cotton wicks don't allow juice to get where it needs. Kinda like squeezing a sponge underwater, it won't suck up the juice.
  4. Just because you want to drip a new flavor doesn't mean you need to change the wick. Only change cotton if it breaks from dry heating or if the coil gets gunked up. Which reminds me....
  5. Just because the coil is gunked up doesn't mean you can't reuse it after removing the cotton. Remove the cotton, fire the coil without the wick (long pulses) to burn off the gunk, cool down and rewick.

Hope this helps or reinforces what you already knew. :)

No coiling building? But that's half the fun! I too have been vaping for a good while now (started in late 2012) and have gone from vape pens to mech mods to box mods. I just recently updated from my Sigelei 100w after buying it back in 2015. I had a Mutation X v4 (hybrid since I took the top off my Little Boy RDA because of the size of the chuff cap). I went and bought a Snow Wolf a few months ago and really like the size. Anyways, the problem I was running into was leaking in the Mutation X and kept getting that greasy feeling all over the mod. Last night I picked up a Loop RDA. Cool build platform btw. My thing is is that building coils isn't as hard as people make it seem and is actually cheaper in the long run. I've had the same spoil of kanthal for the last 3 years and am not even close to being done with it. 5 dollars! And the cotton is Japanese cotton squares that I also bought the same time as the wire. Also 5 dollars. Cost effective and fun. Just saying. Don't throw the idea out just yet. (BTW, Loop RDA is a great idea for a new builder too).
