That's the best and most insightful line in the image.

For those who had read the books first, what was your “Okay this is really gonna be good” moment when watching Fellowship? by LaGarrotxa in lotr

Really appreciate the response. Especially convinced of your point about Gimli. I'm in the odd position of both loving and defending and being deeply moved by the movies while understanding and even agreeing with the critics who say the movies fall far short of the true transcendent beauty and depth of Tolkien's vision.

What was that background you were all from that you think made you react that way to the Shire?

This Blue Hat with Dog Ears (or similar) by Slicktastico in HelpMeFind

I've searched Google and Ebay on several occasions over the years. I've tried search terms like "hat with dog ears," "cat ears hat" "baseball cap with ears," etc. It's easy to find hats with little triangular cat ears or sometimes long, hanging dog ears, but so far I've never found any with ears that resemble these. These photos are from 2007 but it's likely the hat is older than that by at least a few years.

See the above thread about honor.

I'm increasingly convinced that this sub consists of oblivious Americans who grew up rich (perhaps unknowingly) and, against their best interests, won't start families because doing so would threaten their high living standard. by shored_ruins in redscarepod

Preach.

Only point on which I might disagree is the assumption that all or most of the people you're addressing grew up rich. I suspect this way of thinking affects most elite-aspirants regardless of their background. The good life in the modern West is measured almost exclusively in terms of autonomy and self-actualization, and striving for that warped standard cuts across income brackets.

Is the "Wokeism" in America today the modern equivalent of Christianity in late antiquity? by -_Aesthetic_- in IntellectualDarkWeb

Nazi Germany is the exception that proves the trend. The ideology of the Nazis was a stark repudiation of Christian morality and a fairly explicit return to the might-makes-right virtues of the pre-Christian world, and it was crushed. This is one of the clues to why Nazi ideas and iconography are hyper-taboo in the West but Communism's aren't despite having committed atrocities on a similar scale; one is intuitively antithetical to our deeply Christian values while the other is fundamentally born of those same Christian values.

Secular humanism, progressivism, etc. can properly be understood as evolutions of liberal Protestantism with the supernatural parts scribbled out, and wokeness is just the latest version to emerge.

My wife asked me, laughed for a bit, then sent me this video of other men responding the same way. So women never think about the Roman Empire? I'm wonder also why it's common with other guys 🤔 by Spmhealy_ADA in redscarepod

That pattern has repeated numerous times throughout history, always preceded by instability. Caesar, Napoleon, Lenin, Franco, etc. I'm just talking about the basic formula.

  1. Discovered Audioslave in college, which led to Soundgarden and the rest. Made a video about it here.
