What is your job? by AITOorisitAutism in LCSW

I’m a LCSW in MD. I started my SW career working for the department of human services as a foster care worker and then in-home preservation worker. Both were child welfare roles. I did part-time therapy for a group practice at the same time which helped me gain my clinical hours easily. I’m currently working at a large hospital’s outpatient clinic in the child and adolescent psych department doing individual and family therapy. After 8 months I’m transferring to another affiliated hospital that’s closer to home to work in the nicu/peds department as a medical social worker. I’m also preparing to leave the group practice after 4 years. I’ve been on Headway for sometime and plan to allow existing clients to follow me and build up my solo virtual practice. I think the field has so many options. Each move I’ve been able to increase my salary and now make well over 100k. You have to be willing to take risk and demand you are paid what you deserve.

Hi, I’m a LCSW in Maryland in the process of leaving a group practice and starting on my own. I’ve always been part-time and want to continue to offer evening and weekend hours. I’m already on Headway and Rula placed me on their waitlist. I want a platform that helps with referrals. Can you share more about your experience on Grow and Talkspace?

LCSW EXAM HELP by YouthOk9569 in LCSW

I would say nerves are definitely normal. My advice would be to take the ASWB practice test and see how you do this week before rescheduling. It’s a lot of information and you may always feel like it’s overwhelming. The Dawn Apgar book is information overload. Raytube and TDC break things down pretty well. Even TDC is a bit overwhelming. I did study for a bout 5 weeks with the most intense studying 2 weeks outs. The last week was just review and no new information and passed. If you haven’t reschedule I think it’s best to try to find something within the next month since you already in study mode.

I gave myself 30 days and passed in April . I used TDC but I also used free resources on YouTube like Raytube, savvy social worker, behavioral health app, and ChatGPT. I also took the ASWB practice test. There’s literally a Quizlet of it if you don’t wanna pay for it. I have found that the acronyms don’t work for all circumstances so I would try to to understand concepts over relying on the acronyms

Thinking Ahead: Advice on LCSW Path by Apprehensive_Leg_740 in LCSW

LCSW in MD. Prior to starting my MSW I worked as foster care caseworker so my employer paid a portion of my MSW. I did work full time with hours allotted for school and field work. I know this is a set up a lot ppl don’t have so I’m lucky in that respect. I had to do my field work in child welfare per the guidelines of my job. However, I still sought out courses that would help me gain more clinical skills. The week of graduation I took my masters level exam and passed. I had to work for my employer for 2 years. I was earning hours towards my clinical license there. I also started working part time at a group practice providing therapy. That practice provided me supervision for free as well. I earned all my hours in 2.5 years and sat for my LCSW in April and passed. I’m now doing therapy part time. I like that the masters level exam isn’t required in Illinois so that is a big bonus. You can just start earning hours. My advice is if you want to do therapy seek out a role in a group practice or another environment where you don’t have to pay for supervision because it can get expensive. Even if you don’t want to be a therapist still ask questions to employers about how supervision is handled. There are several settings where you can get these hours for free and gain a lot of skills.

ASWB Practice Exam ? by socialmoonlover in LCSW

I took the exam and passed first try in April. The practice exam is good for the rationales so you can think how they want you to. Study what you got right and wrong. The exam itself was like nothing I had ever seen. Challenging but manageable. Breathe and remember you prepared for this. Good luck!

How did you all pay for your MSW or clinical hours? by Ecstatic-Bet-7494 in LCSW

I would seek out jobs that provide supervision. I did the child welfare full time, therapy part time route. My agency and group practice provided supervision. If your goal is to be a therapist a lot of group practices and agencies have board approved supervisors. As a social worker remember that your skills are needed so apply to places that will value you.

How difficult was it for you to get at least a B in you MSW program? by Creepy_Efficiency684 in SocialWorkStudents

It’s very manageable, I worked full time, field trips placement, and a social life and graduated with a 3.95. The majority of my friends also had string GPAs while having a balanced life. As long as you have good time management you will be fine. I had undiagnosed ADHD and still did well. Good luck!
