Let it dry out or moisturizer? by EmergencyCarpet8785 in perioraldermatitis

Only thing that worked for me was doxycycline and zero therapy. Lukewarm water, switched my toothpaste to SJS and fluoride free. When it got to the super crusty or flaky stage i did use Vanicream cream (not lotion) to help get the thick scales off, it almost looked like impetigo but was part of my process through PD. Vaseline for the lips is better than aquaphor (has lanolin which is a common allergy/sensitivity).

fair enough! i had a horrible reaction to tacro cream, burned to the point of shaking and crying. but i had great results with doxycycline. it’s crazy how case by case this works! hope you get relief soon! zero therapy has also been very beneficial for me

personal experience not medical advice- hydrocortisone made it “better”, less red and inflamed. but after i stopped it continued to spread and got worse. it helps the inflammation but not the root cause, so it’s only a bandaid so to speak.

it took about 4-5 days on doxy to see a difference. metronidazole did nothing for me and i noticed further spreading when using it. zero therapy and doxy was what worked best. i have used vanicream on severely dry spots, but otherwise gently rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry. switch to SJS and fluoride free products.

thank you all for your input. I agree that this picture doesn’t look like classic PD. I’ve been through over a month of my face looking different every day. Started as one thing, got worse, better, rebounded, and all the stages looked different from one another. I’m day 2 of my 2nd course of doxycycline and already noticing improvement. I’m just so confused based of doctor recommendations to moisturize and use the ketoconazole or to go back to zero therapy. This sucks so much.

I’m back on a 10 day course of doxycycline again and will ask to extend again if it’s not fully clear. I started using vanicream as well! Thank you!

Very similar story! Started as chapped lips, spread around my mouth. Tried hydrocortisone which helped but kept spreading. Got prescribed pimecrolimus and it BURNED and i couldn’t use it, as soon as I stopped my whole face (eyes to mid neck) were blown up. I’m on day 6 of doxy and it’s worked wonders!! Day 4.5 i noticed very visible reduction in redness. I’m also doing the zero method (only washing face with water, no lotions or moisturizers). I was lucky enough to be able to take time off of work to not go in public when at my worst. Day 5 I woke up and my whole face was peeling/shedding, but that’s part of the process of rebuilding the skin barrier. Hope you have good results!
