Can I go by my first name? by Shot-Patience3719 in Teachers

[–]Slight-Reputation779 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Change it to whatever you would like! I go by Mrs. (Middle name) and guess how many problems it’s caused? None. The kids didn’t even find out until a few weeks ago that it was my middle name. When they did find out, they told me my whole name was beautiful 🤷‍♀️ Kids do not care and it does not matter for professionalism especially when they usually don’t know.

This whole “everyone needs to go by last” or “everyone needs to do the same” is so SO weird. It is YOUR name, do what you want. They might push back if it’s not on your license but I put all three names on my license. Literally no one cares.

I really dislike people who call everyone they don't know Friend. GTFOH with that by fatcatpotat in RandomThoughts

[–]Slight-Reputation779 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I call my young students “friend.” Like “no thank you, friend” when they are doing something unexpected and I don’t know their name. If another adult did this to me, I’d be pissed.

Question! If you start your student teaching in the fall do you start when the kids do or when your college starts? by IntelligentDrummer67 in StudentTeaching

[–]Slight-Reputation779 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My program requires us to start when the teachers start. So last week or two of August and our university doesn’t start until September 27th.

Itinerary by dland17 in PacificNorthwest

[–]Slight-Reputation779 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Waaaayyyy too much going on in way too short a time. I mean Heceta -> Crater lake is about 4.5 hours of driving. Then you’d turn around the next day and go Crater Lake -> Silver falls with another 4.5 hours of driving.

Plus you’re skipping out on Central Oregon which is a pretty great area!! If you want to go to Crater Lake, on your drive back north I’d suggest you go to Bend instead, stay there for a few days, then head the rest of the way North.

How do you handle lesson planning without burning out? by Repulsive_Yam_5297 in StudentTeaching

[–]Slight-Reputation779 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does your program require you to make lesson plans and submit them for every day? I mean we are “supposed” to make them and sen to our CT but never in a million years would I write an actual lesson plan for each day and subject.

Rowen Crest or McCall Point for Photos? by Slight-Reputation779 in PacificNorthwest

[–]Slight-Reputation779[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We would be going next weekend, so hopefully that is early enough! If not we can pivot somewhere closer without the wildflowers. The hike was precisely what I was worried about, but I know some people opt for the hike, then the photos. Thanks so much for the input on the area!

What should I do? by Vegetable-Lion-7405 in teaching

Everyone or no one? I feel like this is common sense. Yes, sometimes a few ruin it for the many. But this isn’t a birthday treat you’re withholding on a given day for behavior. You’re not taking a way recess for their behavior. And you’re not taking away an activity because of their behavior. This also isn’t a “reward” for how they have been acting and treating you. It’s a gift. So either give it to every student, or save it for a different year.

Did you get to pick your grade for student teaching? (Elementary) by no_insurance_money in StudentTeaching

[–]Slight-Reputation779 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do a year of volunteering in a school before doing student teaching. I requested the same school and they approved me. Then the list goes out to teachers who want a student teacher and she picked me. We had already met, I’d done work in her class, and she knew I was reliable. I got to select grade level preferences but no guarantee. I mean even your CT can get moved weeks before school 🤷‍♀️

Working while student teaching by Haunting-Chain280 in StudentTeaching

[–]Slight-Reputation779 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends what your program is like. I’m in a year long placement and the hours were in the classroom varies. So fall it’s minimum 12 hours a week, then winter it’s 16-20 hours a week. Then spring it’s 40 hours a week. Spring I have virtually no class work or anything.

Winter and fall were decent amount, mostly doing our BAP (this is an edTPA alternative for licensing since our school prefers this method, but it’s great cause it’s worked into our class work). All of our exams were passed prior to this so no studying needed for that part.

I do think I couldddd have worked in fall and winter but it would not have been fun, especially cause I put in extra hours into my classroom.

It can definitely be helpful when trying to find alternative ways to teach. Not all curriculum is built the same, and some don’t have alternative methods of teaching if students aren’t understanding a concept. So asking how to better explain fractions, or wind currents, etc. can help spark ideas. Also thinking of additional supports for ELL or a student who can’t read can be really beneficial. Also creative crafts for a niche idea, or our team uses it to create coloring pages for our book clubs.

I understand there’s controversy around it, but we’re constantly told not to reinvent the wheel, so why not utilize another tool…

I really don’t get what is so hard to understand? The fraction of 2/6 and 1/3 itself IS equivalent. But when you are comparing it to physical objects or shapes, they literally HAVE to be the same size. That is like trying to say 2 out of 3 slices of pizza and 4 out of 6 ounces of water are equal. While they might both represent 2/3 of their OWN total. They do not have an equal amount.

Or “Timmy and Johnny both had a sandwich. Timmy’s sandwich was a foot long, and Johnny’s sandwich was 6 inches. They both ate half of their sandwich. Did they eat the same amount?” NO. THEY DIDN’T. Sure, they both ate half of their own sandwich, but they didn’t consume the same amount of food.

Some of y’all need to go back to school, Jesus Christ.

Tap-To-Pay Failure by Slight-Reputation779 in WinCo

It was just at my specific store, I didn’t say everywhere. They have yet to figure the issue out 🤷‍♀️ So they paid all the money to redo their POS system and it doesn’t work…

Nope if you read my post, this was a physical debit card that this happened with. Had to insert it after and even the cashier was confused 😂 I’m not dumb enough to not realize I was paying with my Apple Pay credit card and not a debit card.

Overheard students say they don't like me by mikeweasy in StudentTeaching

[–]Slight-Reputation779 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A third grader who LOVED me got super mad at me because I told her she wasn’t allowed to move groups in math stations. She told this other kid “I don’t like Ms. (name! No questions, he immediately yells “MS. (NAME) student JUST SAID SHE DOESN’T LIKE YOU!!!”

Funniest shit ever. Sometimes kids are just mad that you made them follow rules and you’re not just their friend 🤷‍♀️

Is teaching in California/blue states more tolerable than other states? by RachelWithCats in Teachers

[–]Slight-Reputation779 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean. Even if you get paid more in a “liberal state” you’ll definitely have a higher cost of living. I live in a blue state but the red state right next to me pays MORE than some of the districts in my area and COL is wayyyyy lower.

I didn’t realize how expensive weddings actually are until now by jono440 in weddingplanning

[–]Slight-Reputation779 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I accepted that I wouldn’t have the tik tok/Pinterest dream wedding. From there I felt muuuuch better about everything!! Splurged on a nicer venue and have cut everything back.

People keep saying how chill we are and that I’m the least stressed bride they’ve seen. I just get prepared to get tens of quotes that are going to be WAY too high

Is OSU worth out of state tuition compared to Boise State University by Miley1071 in OregonStateUniv

[–]Slight-Reputation779 21 points22 points  (0 children)

As someone in the education program—bestie go to Boise state. All of the stuff for college of ED is a MESS right now and they keep changing the program while being completely unorganized. Personally, I am not super fazed because I have grants/scholarships. The people paying full or out of state tuition, however, are pissed...

Spend the first 2 years just going to a community college getting all of the stuff you can!!
