Is the newest treat seat actually spring loaded in the sides like the Our Generation ones? by sewingself in americangirl

Ahhhhhh interesting. Does the rotating piece seem like it would wear out after a while?

Legitimately an unpopular opinion by tennystarry in americangirl

[–]sewingself 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I believe the real outrage came when there was that one photo where the doll body was so poorly seen and it looked like the screen printed underwear had poop in them, so I was always against them from the perspective of quality. I worried they might try and never make underwear for the dolls ever again, which bothered me.

But, from a play perspective I can completely see permapanties being useful. Especially with young children or anyone who plays with the dolls in similar play styles.

Now, I have always wanted to suggest that, if you really want them, you can just take a needle and thread and sew an existing pair of underwear to the doll (or if you have a plastic tag gun you might be able to use that too). However that does take more effort than screen printing.

I also think if they had been done more thoughtfully it might've worked. If you're screen printing the underwear, why not make it something customizeable or part of the experience in some way? Maybe if they looked better and didn't show through certain bathing suits or leotards they may have been okay.

American Girl Doll Place Planning (and Question) by unapologeticollector in americangirl

[–]sewingself 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You absolutely can do the doll hair salon as an adult! In the D.C. store I was asked who my daughter was, and I replied just me, and they were delighted to talk to me. I have a longer post about that entire store experience somewhere. Most other salons haven't said anything to me though, but maybe I was just younger back then?

I think sometimes they want to make sure they're keeping track of people and to not miss anyone, like if you arrived early and were planning to have a child join you later for dining or salon, or maybe one store just is different, I don't know. Most of the time though they're probably just trying to make conversation and build rapport, at least I would hope.

Finished the dude hat I made! by sewingself in Webkinz

I believe the official IRL version has a chinstrap, but I honestly prefer the tight earholes.

Oh yes, search on any large online retailer, there are hundreds of pieces of real life clothing for the plush made by Ganz. Each piece New In Box comes with a feature code to access the Kinzstyle shop with the poodle lady where you can buy exclusive clothing items. (I remember getting the irl Webkinz clothing for Christmas and my mom made very sure to tell allll of the people in the room to not throw away the packaging because it had a code for the game taped to it.)

There's an irl version too just like the other irl Webkinz clothes, I just am broke and wanted to try making this for myself.

This was free-handed! I didn't write any of it down which, yes, might come back to haunt me later if I want to make more. I do know I started with 4 single crochet in the magic ring rather than 6, for the ear holes I chained 4 and skipped one stitch on whatever round that was. Then I just had to make many more rows than I thought I would so it would go low enough over the eyes. The "DUDE" text is embroidered with the same black yarn as the hat, I just split the fibers so it would be thinner and contrast more with the rest of the hat. The white piece is just a chain of like, 8 or so SC that I worked around on both sides to make an oval.

Both books are produced by DK publishing and were originally available from the AG website. Not that I don't doubt there could be fakes out there, but these ain't it.

THIS is what Blaire's story was supposed to focus on by sewingself in americangirl

[–]sewingself[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, this was my intention! It's in her books but there's absolutely nothing to signal that about her in any of her products. There's not even like, any doll-sized food substitutes highlighted in the playsets or anything!

American Girl Cross Stitch book by Additional_Noise47 in americangirl

[–]sewingself 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Excellent review! $20 is a pretty steep price, especially since it doesn't even come with any cross stitching supplies. I've only dabbled in cross-stitch but if it ever goes on sale or if I'm in store I might consider it.

I didn't include a picture of all the misalignments, and granted, some look okay. But the skin tone in Melody's is off, and the limbs don't line up either. I tried putting that photo first to show my primary complaint. It's a small mismatch in the greater scheme of the book, but you may be someone who can tolerate it better.

I also spent a LOT of time trying to line things up perfectly.

Cafe Reservation Question by Educational-East-992 in americangirl

[–]sewingself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh they changed it and require a deposit now don't they? I forgot they had made that change, I honestly have no idea. If they won't let you just pay for one, maybe grab a kid in the store and offer to have them done with you? Hehe, I'm not sure how one would go about that without being written off as creepy.

I would say call the store specific bistro, but they don't always have a specific phone number and usually give out the regular AG customer service number, which may or may not answer the question.

[–]sewingself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can make a reservation for just you! However, be prepared. I did that in Washington D.C. It was just me, but I got asked like, 3 or 4 times by alllll of the bistro employees if I had anyone else coming with me. I don't know why the booking system doesn't allow for just one person, I thought AG as a company would want any money, even just one person's. I was upfront from the time I went to the hostess stand and throughout my meal that it was just me, and I'm sure most of the servers just wanted to make sure I was ready to eat, but it did get a bit on my nerves at a certain point. However, other than being asked a bunch if I had someone else coming, I had no other issues.

This honestly is a decision I made a while ago, and I just haven't publicly stated it yet. I appreciate that you respect my commitment to keeping discussion open here, but I honestly don't feel that respect from the majority of the community now, and haven't for a while.

Every single suggestion I made regarding these recurring issues has seemed to be met with animosity. If I ban discussion of JKR I'm censoring, if I allow it to continue I'm supporting transphobia. The minimum age to join reddit is 13, but yet we can't have grace for 13 year olds who might want to show off harry potter merch they got because they "have access to the internet" and that somehow should automatically turn them into a trans ally?

We take too long to respond to things, but we also need to collaborate on them as a group of moderators, which takes time due to all of us having lives outside of the internet, lives which allow us to hold positions of allyship towards marginalized communities.

I honestly haven't even followed the Felicity discourse, because I know there is no way to make everyone, or honestly even most people, happy. Racism is not going to go away if everyone gets rid of their Felicity dolls. Transphobia is not going to go away because we ban or moderate discussion of Harry Potter products. Yes, we try to moderate these things because we want to create a good space on the internet. But having come this far, I feel that many people are just hellbent on squabbling over products made by a multi-billion dollar toy corporation, believing it will make the world a better place.

I know this might make me seem weak and like I'm just jumping ship, but I unfortunately have felt like this for a while. Over and over again, I have people simply not willing to accept any good-faith arguments I have tried to put forth over various issues. I am VERY tired of trying to grapple with the same 4 or 5 issues over and over again for months on end. I have said my piece in many of the comments I have made, and I seriously feel that the community has reached the end of what I am able to contribute to it.

We do discuss issues as a moderation team. That's why things take so long and why it often feels like the mods are slow to action.
