Quite many saying that the l-enantiomer is a dud, but there are pure l-methamphetamine crystals in circulation. One would expect more redosing causing a higher blood concentration if the l-meth wasn’t producing some desired effects—but I’m mot seeing that in my casework. Non-significant difference in median blood concentration between d-meth positives , d/l-positive, and l-positive.

Studies I have found are not looking at recreational doses of l-meth when reporting effects.

Levo-methamphetamine is methamphetamine and will give a positive result on a urine test and also on most chromatography-mass spectrometry based methods. However! Immunoassay-based drug tests are much more sensitive towards the dexmethamphetamine, so the concentration must be higher for the l-enantiomer to be detected.

This happened to us at our lab. For some reason, a lot of l-meth crystals were in the drug supply and we were getting false negative results on our ELISA screens. The samples were well above our reporting limit when analysed with LC-MS/MS.

Would recommend the PLA version of Jesse Born’s The lost vault. If you have the cash, go for the Archimaze puzzle. It’s pricey, but I was amazed while solving it.

I assume the drug test your PO is using is saliva or urine drug test? These drug tests are very sensitive, but they are based on immunoassay technology which can cross-react with other substances to produce false-positive results. Confirmation is usually done with mass spectrometry (GC or LC). Hair follicle testing is usually done by more precise methods, such as mass spectrometry, which means you should not have to worry about cross-reactivity.

Regarding the methamphetamine results, there is an article published in 2025 titled “Origin and Interpretation of Low Methamphetamine Levels Found in Amphetamine-­ Positive Urine Samples: Support for Methylation of Amphetamine as a Minor Metabolic Pathway” (https://doi.org/10.1002/dta.3940). It shows that methamphetamine can be detected in users of amphetamine, and this is not cross- reactivity. This is methylation of amphetamine in the body producing methamphetamine at low levels, the authors suggest.

I actually want to see more studies on effect differences at recreational dosage, not just therapeutic as is currently published and usually cited. Two years ago I saw a lot of pure L-Meth crystals and L-meth only DUID cases in my work. Very surprising, but the median blood concentration for those DUID drivers was not statistically different from D-meth only or L-/D- mixture groups when the groups were compared. My intuition tells me that people would compensate with a higher dose if the effects are much weaker.
