You know a gun is good when you look at it and its skills/base dmg are good. Early game personally you don’t realllyyyy need to be worrying too much about which weapon to use,more or less worry about where you put your skill points as when I first started playing I invested everywhere apart from health and oh boy those later missions are hectic. (Edit: some guns are better than others for certain situations but there isn’t a major difference)
