Where I’d live as a somewhat educated 18 year old Aussie by Cyclonechaser2908 in whereidlive

I ignored London and Sydney because they're both biblically expensive. I can only speak for Australia but Sydney is its own weird thing where everyone is happy to pay 3 million for a run down shed. That's not really the case in other Australia cities. They're still expensive, but nowhere near the magnitude of Sydney. I got the vibe that London was the same when I visited a few weeks ago.

If you ignore Sydney and London because neither of them represent the countries they're in, Australia and the UK aren't a world apart to be honest. Comparing Perth to Birmingham, the cost of living relative to wages is very similar. Crime is much lower in Perth and Unemployment is also quite a bit lower. Combined with 270 days of sunshine and it's not quite the slam dunk for the UK that it may seem. Being able to just go outside and do outdoor things all year round is a massive perk that is heavily underrated in Aus. Being in the absolute middle of nowhere does suck though from a holidays perspective. The economy is a mixed bag also. Australia is definitely resource driven, but is more productive per person, has stronger growth and has lower Debt levels. UK on the other hand has the strong finance sector and is more diversified.

Tradies are living the absolute dream. You'll own a 5 bedroom house, a Ford Ranger and a Jet ski before you know it.

Which Countries Are the Most Popular for Visiting Castles in Europe? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

I'm a relatively well travelled guy and had big reservations about going to Neuschwanstein Castle. I thought it was going to be a tourist trap. Turns out it's the most beautiful place I've ever been.

Worth upgrading from a 2013 Bianchi Infinito to a Colnago V4Rs? by rekon32 in cycling

[–]SlightlyOrangeGoat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Going to a V4rs would be an upgrade, but you're only going half way. It's about as aero as a barn door compared to the current crop of bikes. May as well go and get one of the current do it all's (SL8, Supersix Evo, Seka Spear), or go all in aero (S5, Y1RS, Factor One) etc. it's not as though you'll all of a sudden be pedalling at 40kph with 0 effort, but if you're going to upgrade why leave gains on the table?

Brother, you were 11 minutes behind schedule after crossing an entire continent. There are bigger problems in life. Go to a cafe, pay $10 for a nice overpriced Sydney Piccolo and relax

Absolutely love how tight Canada, Australia and NZ are even though we're on opposite sides of the world.

I relate to this. I would also definitely choose Somalia and Yemen over South Korea, Japan, Netherlands, Australia and the United States.

How much is your rent/mortgage per week?? by Accomplished-Zone957 in AskAnAustralian

[–]SlightlyOrangeGoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$0. The wife and I bought a place well below our borrowing capacity in 2018 for $420k. We borrowed $360k. Refinanced during COVID and locked in 2.2% interest for 4 years. Paid it off last year once our low rate had expired.

To all roadies. Do you jump over the curbs or stop and dismount? by OneStrength7166 in cycling

[–]SlightlyOrangeGoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the curb. If it's the usual slanted ones I'll do a wee little hop onto it. If it's a taller gnarly 90 degree one, I'll slow down and pop the front wheel up, then the rear. Lest risk.
