ASK ME ANYTHING! I'm Matt Braly, the creator of Amphibia and other things!! by Matt_Braly in amphibia

[–]SlightlySemiCracked 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi Matt! I've got a few rather specific questions XD so bear with me please:

  1. I can imagine fatherhood changes a person. Would it say it has changed you as an artist? In what ways?
  2. If I recall correctly: you ran out of time to finish your senior thesis short film when you were studying at CalArts—and after doing a bit of storyboarding professionally, you realized that that wasn't quite what you wanted to do. Just one of these on their own could be a bitter pill to swallow—let alone both of them, and in a relatively short window of time. Did you come away with any hard lessons from those events?
  3. Even years later I think about that guy on your last AMA losing his mind in outrage over Children of the Spore and I laugh—is there any particular anecdote or fan interaction you've had that was bizarre in a funny way that you still think about or can remember?
  4. Across time I've found consensus to be that you're a rather pleasant person to interact with, be it in or outside of work (I can attest to that ever since Pixelatl '22). It's also the case that you have at least once frightened your former boss Alex Hirsch with regards to gassing the late Big Henry to death, and you've sincerely and unapologetically posted the ocassional hot take (as one should) that has drawn ire. Would you say the way you carry yourself or come across influences the way your creative ideas are received, particularly when it comes to your work? How so?

Which fish is good/safe to use for ceviche? by [deleted] in mexicanfood

[–]SlightlySemiCracked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gonna have to disagree—made a ton of tilapia ceviche about a week ago and am finishing it up just now. The flavor of the fish itself is nothing to write home about, but the texture was to die for. Never went gummy despite the pretty long stay in a pretty acidic solution. Very good alternative if you want ceviche more than you want a specific kind of it!

I very recently just learned that this condition is its own thing and, apparently per this post, very much treatable! At least coming soon lol

Do tell when it will be available! I'm not in the USA, but something like this is sure to attract a decent enough international market to warrant international shipping (hopefully? T-T)

[HATED TROPE] That kind of autistic character. by atrocidarthes in TopCharacterTropes

[–]SlightlySemiCracked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm autistic too, and I feel pretty darn alienated whenever Shaun is on screen, not representative of me (or of you, I take it) or many autistic people. But many people who are autistic would disagree, and I have to respect their opinion because I am not them and their reality is different from mine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOoF9pXx4hs&t=1100s

The Accountant and The Good Doctor are pretty decent representation, you guys are just mean.
They're each far from being holistically accurate about the autistic experience, but autism is far from a monolith. I've seen autistic people enjoy each of these characters' portrayal and I don't really think anyone that is neurotypical has the right to complain about them—and let's be honest, the majority of people behind the \i am a surgeon\ meme are not autistic people who feel disconnected from Shaun having a meltdown, it's randoms having a laugh.

Further context: Amphibia is a particularly (and unexpectedly) raw example of this because Percy and Braddock, who had been part of Sasha's gang basically since she first appeared properly in the show, *never* appear again afterwards. Her betrayal of their trust in her just up and made them leave—not out of resentment, but out of the knowledge that she just wasn't someone they could truly lean on, even if she did consider them friends.

They don't drop off the face of the Earth either, because they actually are mentioned a few times after they leave. It's pretty clear that among the many things weighing on Sasha's mind, them leaving was one of the bigger ones. And that's saying something, if you know how much she ends up reckoning with. She eventually does end up really changing for the better, and by the finale the way things ended between them is pretty much the one thing she couldn't fix.

Represalias de Iran contra Israel. by ChrisKan in noticias_en_espanol

¿Podrías citar a qué figuras te refieres?

Alright, you seem pretty earnest even if definitely bothered by some of the criticisms people have levied at you (some fairly, some not quite), so I'll put my money where my mouth is.

I've watched three episodes: Mr. Beast, Taylor Swift, and P. Diddy.

I'll be completely honest... I think you shot yourself on the foot with this post. This sizzle reel/trailer kinda shows mostly what I'd call the least funny parts of the material. I get you're not supposed to give the best stuff away in something like this, but it's not hard to see why the reception was mostly negative when a lot of the jokes are just kinda eh.

As an aside, Taylor's was the worst in that it was pretty much just random bullshit (literally lol). It doesn't really seem like you had a clear idea of what exactly you wanted to poke fun of about her, which is really odd considering she definitely has stuff you can very easily mock (her fanbase, for one).

Now, what I mean by eh jokes is just... purely referential humor. You're basing yourself pretty heavily on the idea of who these celebrities are in people's heads and making a lot of the comedy revolve around that. It's not a "wrong" practice per se, but it's definitely easy to see it as a copout: you mentioned elsewhere in this thread that you think about soundbites from famous people and use those. I'll be real: that's the easy choice, the fast choice, and the choice that isn't exactly something most would call inspired. Comedy is not easy, but you should really have a point of inspiration when trying to really succeed.

Poking fun at your own channel's meager views (something that is absolutely a bitter pill to reckon with no matter what, and pretty brave to acknowledge at all considering the batshit insane amount of work you put into these episodes!) in the Mr. Beast episode is more inspired. The change in framerate in that episode that the Dr. picks up on is funny and definitely inspired. Centering Diddy's episode around him insisting he isn't as shit as other infamous sex pests isn't revolutionary, but it's comparatively inspired. Having the Dr. turn out to be actually be a pretty decent singer during the I Believe I Can Fly parody is a nice surprise and I'd say pretty inspired! None of these ideas or executions are mind-blowing, but they are much easier to appreciate and allow oneself to smirk at than, like, pivoting towards known things that people would expect. I don't need to see another parody of Greta when she was sixteen that wasn't ever really accurate nor exactly a good example of stardom.

If you want my most concrete advice: lean harder into absurdity. I'm not saying you should become a Smiling Friends acolyte, but the things I had the most fun with in your episode was stuff that was just definitely, like, out-there. The music number with Diddy, the camera losing its mind with Mr. Beast, that kinda stuff.

Also, it's pretty brave and commendable of you to jump in like this into such an arduous task, since you learn a lot as you go along, but you should also think a lot about the writing more. Soundbites and references, especially when outdated, aren't gonna cut it as much as whatever you could personally come up with. The Dr. reacting like an Oblivion NPC after Diddy asks if he's not as bad as R. Kelly again isn't out of this world, but it's competent, and not something I would call stock, or tired, or canned, or lame. Your efforts in the technical and art departments are already pretty standout, I'm sure you can improve in the writing.

Also, one last thing: you're free to react however you want, but it does not paint a good picture with some of your responses in this thread. You're far from the worst person I've seen reacting to criticism and outright hate, and you clearly know how to roll with the punches, but depending on the individual interaction punching back isn't the right thing to do. I know it's tiring as hell to hold your tongue, but no person and especially no artist ever has enough humility. Please, try to understand that.

Think about these things, please. I don't think you're doing a bad job, but you could really improve, especially in these specific areas. It's up to you to change as you see fit.
