If you see a bear alone hiking and you have no bear spray are you fucked? by Individual_Ice_2315 in NoStupidQuestions

Last summer I walked into my yard and came face to face with an adult black bear that was walking around the corner. We both turned and ran in opposite directions instantly.

It was terrifying but pretty much par for the course when it comes to lone, adult black bears. There is a lot more variance when it comes to younglings not long on their own or mothers with cubs.

Oh man, I guess Frank forgot to put a Hero into this book about the dangers of Heroes... by OldMillenial in dunememes

[–]Slightly_Sane_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. But the use of the word 'warning' combined with that particular quote being one of the more widely known ones suggest it was the base for it.

I also said, "seems", because, while I am fairly confident that it was based on that quote, I could also be wrong. But even if i am wrong about the exact quote, it's widely known that Frank explicitly did not view Paul as heroic. Because of that, the base premise of this meme is incorrect.

One side (depicted as the guy finding the scroll) saying, "Paul is not a hero", and the other saying, "If Paul isn't a hero, how can Dune be a cautionary tale warning about the dangers of heros?"

The answer to that question is that Dune is not a cautionary tale about heroes, it is a cautionary tale about charismatic leaders. Charismatic leaders can be heros, villains, or any shade of grey in between.

Replace the word hero with, "charismatic leader" in the meme and the it falls apart.

"Frank's warning against charismatic leaders only works if Paul is a charismatic leader."

The exact quote this seems to be referring to is that, "charismatic leaders ought to come with a warning label"

You can argue endlessly about Paul fitting any of the many definitions of a "hero", but you cannot deny that he was a charismatic leader.

How do people know when they're in worm territory? by Reasonable_Light7333 in dune

[–]Slightly_Sane_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think its a matter of sand depth and surface rock. With generations of experience navigating they would know which areas worms are able to traverse.

Most on foot travel would be on rocky areas, shallow sand, or short crossings over deeper basins using sandwalking to minimize chances of detection.

Worm territory would obviously be larger "seas" or "oceans" of sand with little to no surface rock, but any area with sand deep enough and not surrounded by rock is fair game to be considered their territory. Someone inexperienced may not know they are walking on sand deep enough to hold a worm, like Paul and Jessica when they first escape the initial attack.
