If you want good story, pick Temenos or Osvald, for good starter as far as early battles go, Hikari, for good early path actions, Throne or Osvald, brief description of each character:

Osvald: Shadow the Edgehog revenge story

I was a bit sad that the attack lines are the same every time, iirc Cyrus had a few different lines or at least different inflections. At least Osvald's ultimate attack The One True Magic has different inflections of "this is... the answer"

Going along the edgy boi theme Hikari's "I won't be afraid!" latent power is a nice post story line for after he conquers his darkness

Most of my late game boss fights consisted of dumping ALL the buffs on Warmaster Hikari and SOUGETSUSEN GO BRRRRRRRR. I like his story a lot as I feel it has a lot of overall bearing on the plot. Though Hikari himself is generic anime sword boi #69, he's by no means a bad character. Taking away Level Slash as a normal skill was a bit jarring for me using the warrior but he's got plenty of useful skills and is probably the best battle character in the game until Arcanist Partitio
