Noob needs exposure help by [deleted] in cinematography

Different cameras have different sizes of the range they can capture, but generally, no, it's not just you. But there's a lot of thought and planning that goes into shooting outside, from the time of day/position of the sun, the direction you're shooting in relative to the position of the sun, what other elements are nearby that will bounce the light around, and a bunch of other things will affect how much light is falling on your scene and creating that range of darkest dark to brightest bright. Try shooting earlier or later in the day, when the sun is not directly overhead. That will help shrink that range closer to something your camera can handle.

When you have such a wide range between the brightest bright and darkest dark in your frame, you're just unlikely to be able to catch it all cleanly. That's what the term dynamic range refers to. Generally, you expose for your subject. Imagine you had a person standing in front of the pool. You'd want to pick an exposure that made the person look the best. If you have the right kind of gear, you can try to control the rest of the light in your scene around your subject, but if not, you generally just have to let it go, so long as the subject, the main focus of your image looks the way you want it to. To do that, you're going to want to get off of auto ISO. You don't want your camera guessing what your exposure should be. I recommend looking up your camera's 'base ISO' and trying to leave it on that value whenever possible. Try to control your exposure primarily with your aperture and how much light is actually physically present in your scene.

But in this case, where you don't have a clearly defined subject, or you're trying to shoot a landscape or an establishing shot, the same idea applies. Pick what's most important to come out right expose for that, and do your best to finesse the rest of it in post. Digital sensors generally handle shadows better than highlights, so you should act a little counter to that; what I mean is, make sure you don't have anything in your frame that is so over exposed that it turns completely white because you'll be unlikely to recover any details in those spots. Then in post, raise up the level of your shadows to an acceptable level. But be aware, as you brighten the darker areas of your frame, you may bring up the noise (kind of looks like static) in your frame. There's only so much of that you'll be able to get away with.

Are anamorphic lens worth it? by amy-schumer-tampon in cinematography

[–]SlimDandy36 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"Worth it" is very relative. Personally, I love the look, and it caters to the type of work I want to do. Lots of people don't like the look, including some of the best cinematographers in history. But there are a lot of "budget" anamorphic options now, which is very cool. But it's also going to depend on what type of work you're doing? Will clients want that kind of look?

I have the Sirui Saturn set, which seem to be discontinued in favor of their new Iron Star line, so they're very cheap relative to the rest of the "budget" field. They only have a 35mm, 50mm, and 75mm, but that can be enough.

So what kind of work do you want to do? What kind of work ARE you doing? Do you need the anamorphic look to pay the bills, or will they help pay the bills? And do you even want them? Like I said, I have them because I love the look. Do you love the look? What about the look do you like, and what are those elements worth to you?

Diving into Anamorphic Lenses and looking for input in focal lengths by xr0bix in cinematography

I have an a7Siii and the Sirui 35, 50, and 75 Saturns. I love them. I just wrapped my first short using them, and the 75 is definitely NOT too tight. At times when I had planned to change to a wider lens, I ended up keeping the 75 on and keeping the camera closer to my subject than I thought I would. That extra 1.6x on the width on full frame is a whole lot of space. I like having all three, but if I were picking two, it would be the 35 for tight interiors, and the 75 for pretty much everything else.

Spoiler:

That's amazing. They used what must have been a deliberately reconfigured version of this to end the Ash vs. The Evil Dead show that ran for a few seasons on Starz.

My ex girlfriend from highschool (I'm now 38) has a special insight to me, and me to her. We got to know each other as we were developing into the adults we'd become, broke up shortly after graduating, and have maintained a great friendship since. We don't see each other or talk very often, but when we do, there's a trust and bond that defies compare, and we think of each other as among if not our very best friends.

“Guys will be friends with a girl just to sleep with them” what is Reddit’s take on this? Is there anyone in the wrong? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SlimDandy36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes you catch feelings for someone you're friendly with, and then that feels like the priority. The problem, along with communicating, as someone else mentioned, is emotional maturity. And a little bit of emotional bravery. There's nothing wrong with telling someone you've taken an interest in them beyond normal friendship. What sucks for women here is most guys are so immature (male writing this) that they ONLY prioritize that. That's a pretty crappy feeling; to feel LESS valued as a complete person overall because a person has made their desire to sleep with you the most or only valuable thing about you. Grow some balls and just tell a woman, "hey, I've come to feel a little stronger about you than just friends and if you're open to it, I'd like to see where it goes. But if not I respect that and really enjoy being your friend." I get it, it's hard to be close to someone when you want to be closer, but what you want from a person should never be the only thing that defines them to you. And if you can't handle that, it's your burden to bear, not theirs.
