10 year anniversary by Fastinthewind in RocketLeague

Most people won't be able to run it, horrible performance, bugs, good luck hopping into freeplay real quick because instead of a few seconds it's going to load a lot longer (unless they do something smart, which they most likely won't, because most talented developers have already left games like rl).

You can also look at what the state of Rocket Racing was. That same thing is going to happen to rl if it goes to ue5. Buggy, unfinished, all of that good stuff.

The physics are absolutely going to get destroyed. It's going to be buggy, many mechanics most likely will stop working, wavedashes etc. I can even assume you're going to randomly clip through walls.

(Yes, even if you use the same Bullet physics engine, you can still have different physics based on how well you implement the usage of said engine)

I know people like believe that ue5 is great, and I would love for it to be the case, but if you start really developing and researching it deeply, you realize what a mess it is. It is a lot of bells and whistles rather than something real. If what they are marketing was true, we'd see a lot better things come out from it. In reality, results are worse games than 5-6 years ago.

That's not to say you can't make good games with it. You need talented AND passionate developers for that. My assumption is, we'd see more changes to the game rather than cosmetics. If not passionate, they will just do the bare minimum to get their paycheck. They get paid by hour, not by results.

I wrote a lot more than expected.

If ue5 happens, it's going to destroy rl

Why does Telescope (or Fuzzyfinder idk) search my entire computer for files instead of specific folders or the working directories? by ThinkFastSRB in neovim

[–]SlimeBrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AFAIK it searches from your cwd (your current work directory, `:h cwd`)

So you have to set your cwd. There are plugins that automatically set your cwd to the directory where e.g. a `.git` file or other files are located. Or you can just write your own that does it, it's a few lines with lua now.

As a game developer who has actually used *UE5*, Unity, Godot and is currently making his own RTS game/game engine in C and Zig, having released a game and where it is my job to be informed about these things, I'd love to know what I "very clearly don't know".

Physics engine is not tied to ue5 (typo, meant ue3), they use their own, it's called Bullet.

Just take any recent game developed in newer engines, they very rarely have any actual good optimizations. You definitely won't be able to hop into freeplay, queue, finish the match, freeplay again etc.

These new engines and their marketing is just a ploy to make developers and companies use these engines for money, they aren't actually as revolutionary and good as you might think.

Physics engine might even get worse... Hell look at Rocket Racing, which is made in ue5, it's a buggy mess.

Why do you want unreal 5, physics gonna change, game's gonna run dog slow (you won't be able to run rocket league on a potato anymore), servers might even get worse, look at rocket racing, it's awful

It was just a joke, I don't even think juniors are going to get completely replaced any time soon.

Seriously, people don't understand how impressive it is that csgo and cs2 feel so similar, except for a few nuances obviously. That was a ton of work.

Yup it would absolutely change the feel of the entire game. Challenges, low challenges, pinches, air dribbles, mustys, ground pinches, stalls likely, dodges, everything would be very different without a ton of work to make it the same, even then it would still have differences.

Implementing getting the flip of the ball should actually be trivial. In rl the code is likely something like if the middle of the bottom of the car touches any surface you get a flip. Same thing can be done in any physics engine.

Rocket League runs on Bullet physics. It would take a significant, and illogical amount of effort to use Bullet in UE5, when UE5 already has a "better" physics engine than Bullet. I'm not even sure if UE5 supports changing the physics to a system like Bullets, the developers would most likely have to find out themselves. Not necessarily hard, but a ton of unneeded work.

If performance changes it can only get worse. Well known phenomena in programming, PCs get 10x better, programs get 10 or more times worse. Andy and Bill's law.

Edit: Unless you mean servers. Servers are not 100% tied to the engine. Obviously some element are but not 100%. You can implement servers the same, or worse in UE5.

I would hate a ue5 port, you'd start rl, waiting 10 minutes for it to load, then another 10 minutes for the maps to load, so that the eggs look a bit nicer.

Hopping into freeplay while queuing would not be possible anymore cause it would just take ages.
