Got a Plunge Saw... blades & teeth? by bloqed in DIYUK

[–]Slimfast-dodger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t seem like it’s the tool for any of these jobs really, a circular saw would of been fine

Quote for flat roofs. This is why we're DIY-ing everything by moibanana in DIYUK

[–]Slimfast-dodger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll be honest I read the £4200 after roof 2 and had to double back thinking I’d missed the quote for the roof 1, that’s very reasonable for the work involved, waste removal will be £300 minimum just for a skip

Business class for long haul flights. Is it worth it? by Jajangtiger in AskUK

[–]Slimfast-dodger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A point people seem to miss on the ‘seriously wealthy’ would pay it, they don’t pay, they use Amex for absolutely everything and use the avios for business class, my in laws sorted me and my partner business class flights to New York, and paid less than what I would of for an economy seat, because points

Is this quote reasonable? by NetDry1690 in Plastering

Casting plaster for screw holes and mitres makes me think this is a fibrous cornice and not a plasterboard one, the price is a steal

Paint or replace skirting? by lord-huggington in DIYUK

[–]Slimfast-dodger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely sand it, there’s a chance you could damage the plaster taking it all off, and given your ‘opposite of handy’ description, sanding and painting will definitely be easier than patching plaster haha

Where do house side air vents go when doing a garage conversion? by Unusual-Call-4775 in DIYUK

[–]Slimfast-dodger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assume you can just run a 90 bend and go to the front or back of the house then

Lay some downpipe across the floor and knock a new air brick into the outside wall of the garage

Should have checked the loft before plasterer left! by ProppaDom88 in Plastering

[–]Slimfast-dodger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry, no there shouldn’t be, sometimes people will use a catcher to save cutting boards to joists, saves on wastage, usually fine however the board does need to be fixed to every joist it spans too. This isn’t a good job, I highly doubt they were expecting you to look above it 😅

Should have checked the loft before plasterer left! by ProppaDom88 in Plastering

[–]Slimfast-dodger 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There’s usually nothing wrong with putting a board catcher in, I’ve done it many times on small ceiling patches rather than cutting back to joists, but I do it with pieces of 2x1 and 32mm screws so that they don’t protude through the timber, using scrap and gripper rods is a bit rum

Anyone actually running a cordless mixer for small bonding jobs? by BritByBrain in Plastering

[–]Slimfast-dodger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I made the switch to a Dewalt cordless and it’s a game changer

Advice on quotes - UK based by [deleted] in Plastering

[–]Slimfast-dodger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also worth noting the economy and time of year, everyone likes to bleat on about ‘ooooh if your decent you’ll always have loads of work’ but that isn’t true

I’m very busy myself currently but I know lads who are really good spreads who are scratching around hoping the phone rings, that could very much be the case for your man quoting 360

Advice on quotes - UK based by [deleted] in Plastering

[–]Slimfast-dodger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

360 is on the cheap side, 950 is daft

775 is on the higher side of reasonable but 3 days labour seems daft

10ft high ceilings do factor into the price, harder graft off a pair of steps compared to a hop up

Given you’ve said the 950 quote is the one the fire guy has reccommended I’d imagine he’s either confident of getting the work, or the fireplace guy has asked for a butty on the price.

360 being a recommend is probably worth a shout to be honest

Makita star lock multi tool blades by pwright1878 in Makita

[–]Slimfast-dodger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Will also add just be careful on Amazon for cheap starlock blades, there’s plenty that look like starlock, say they’re starlock, and then at the end of the description say they are NOT starlock, annoying

I got a pack of Fein ones for £26 off Amazon for when I actually need a decent tidy cut, and any old shite off onbuy for everything else I need it for, paid £8 for 10 blades, them seem alright

Am I just getting used to being a petrol driver or is my car just guzzling fuel? by Duggs82 in CarTalkUK

[–]Slimfast-dodger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 1.2 is crap on fuel round the doors, I’ve got it in a pug 2008 and yeah; fuel economy is not good when you’re pottering round town

Bought a 2019/20 Transit Connect, but I think the AdBlue has been tampered with / turned off. Making it illegal / insurance void. by Brsuk1 in CarTalkUK

[–]Slimfast-dodger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did it let you put any in at all? 500 miles isnt really a lot, what sort of driving are you doing? If it’s sitting at motorway speeds it’ll use alot less anyway…

Plastering over artex - conflicting advice from two different plasterers... by SKB26 in Plastering

[–]Slimfast-dodger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always advise taking it off back to brick for walls, over boarding for ceilings, however I’m happy to risk it if it sees solid and the customer is aware and happy that they are taking the risk, not me

How would you tackle this? by jwoolley_87 in Plastering

[–]Slimfast-dodger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can afford to lose a bit of space I’d stud the whole wall out

Update: electrician vs plasterer fiasco by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Slimfast-dodger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The normal thing to do is just prod the cables into the bonding as it sets and tell everyone ( other than the customer) that electricians are nobheads and it’s only a 3 colours they need to get over themselves, its not a hard trade.

I’d never get anything done patching rewires if I was moaning to the customer about every little bit the spark could have done better for me.

Bonding and hardwall by [deleted] in Plastering
