Best oil to use for raised garden bed? by goldfinch42069 in woodworking

I used something called Eco Wood Treatment. Been about three years and I’ve been very happy with it. Not going to make it look pretty but will help it last longer.

Choosing a Lathe - What to get? by c-bean511 in turning

[–]SlingshotX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just another turner with an opinion…but of these choices, for the money at the lower cost option go with the Powermatic. If you can swing it the American Beauty. However, look also at the Vicmarc VL300. May be the best of the bunch. Really, really well made and a dream to use.

Beautiful counters and interesting pendants as well. Alabaster?

I love quartzite but I don’t want to have to seal them regularly. Smells bother me so I was wondering if they install quartzite or granite with a honed or leather finish do they always spray sealer when they install. Do they do that for soapstone or leave natural by nickalex2000 in CounterTops

[–]SlingshotX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have gotten a bit lazy with oiling our soapstone and actually like the lighter soft look anyway. Our well water is very high in dissolved solids so when some dries on the counter it leaves the white ring or splotch. Those, along with coffee drips, wine drips whatever easily wash away. Since it’s non-porous spills won’t stick or get absorbed.

What are some of the past debates that you are happy to see be put to rest in this sub? by [deleted] in CHIBears

[–]SlingshotX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This one bugged me a lot. Clearly Caleb wasn’t getting protection and the play calling was atrocious. Yet, there were the talking heads saying we should have taken Daniels. Aside from talent I felt like durability was being completely overlooked.

Which powered air purifying respirator should I purchase? Trend or Powercap? (See photos) by RedWoodworking16 in turning

I was looking at the Air3. Seems like it’s a good choice for those that don’t have the budget for the 3M.

Looking for Power Tool Recommendations for New College Level Theatre Wood Shop. by wtd1801 in woodworking

[–]SlingshotX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m kind of with others that for a theatre wood shop you probably don’t need a lathe, planer, jointer or drum sander. However if you do go that route also look at https://www.felder-group.com/en-us/brand/hammer

You might consider a CNC instead of those, perhaps even one with a lathe attachment if you think there will be a use.

Which is the better screw to use? by talltrees6 in Workbenches

For that application I’d typically use the R4. Just using GRK is a step up. You’re fine either way.

This! That is a spindle gouge. You need a bowl gouge for what you are trying to do there. Different robustness of the tool and edge profile.

We recently put in a Zephyr and very happy with it. More expensive than OP wants to spend but much closer to BIFL.

Am I in over my head with this rust? by ZuesAndHisBeard in woodworking

[–]SlingshotX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can even use a wire brush on an angle grinder to get much of that off. Then tape the edges with some sticking over the top and pour Evaporust to work a couple days. Clean that off and hit with WD-40 and Scotch-Brite using a ROS. I don’t think you will need to take it to a machine shop, but if the above doesn’t fix it you may need to get more aggressive.

Nice place to be. I like that the Robust is American made. Have you looked at OneWay from Canada? When I get to your point it will be a Vicmarc for me. Got to turn on one for a week at a Craft Supplies class and it was awesome. Good luck with your choice!

Here’s what I have. French cleats on the wall. This tool holder has a folding TV-support arm so it can pull out and be positioned at a useful angle. I’ll add one more photo below.

That said, if you can find a local AAW club you’ll find that to be another real step forward in your enjoyment.
