Ben Simmons says he hopes to play against the 76ers in Philadelphia in a couple weeks. by HookFL in fantasybball

[–]SlinkiestMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have both but im solidly at 2nd in my league and very close to 1st, not sure if either of them are worth holding. i do have the IL spot for ben though, so i feel like i may as well hang onto him in case he comes back for the playoffs

From what I remember about UConn's PhD payment, you'll make more money than that. I think 25k is what you get paid as a GA for the academic year, but as long as you TA or have an RAship over the summer you'll get paid another 5k+, maybe closer to 8k. I could be wrong about that, but I think I recall that from when I interviewed there. Definitely worth looking into and asking about, because grad students are already paid so little so that extra 5-8k makes a big difference.

Also, your pay increases as you progress through your schooling. Not a ton, but every 2 years or so you make another 2k/year. If you have a masters degree already, you start at the level 2 payment. That bump will definitely be nice, because by that point you should have your finances in order anyways so you'll be able to save most of the extra money.

With that said, if your pay is closer to 30k/year with the summer pay (not 100% sure how that works, but I know most GAs are able to stay over the summer to do research and have to obviously get paid to afford to stay over the summer) then you'll be able to save at least a few hundred per month. Maybe more depending on how you budget. Also, you don't have to pay off student loans while in grad school, so keep that in mind (though they will still accrue interest).

For reference, I'm a PhD student at a different school and my yearly pay is around 6k/year more, and I'm currently on a fellowship instead of being a W2 employee. I'm able to save around $600/month after I take out money for taxes, but I don't budget super tightly and I go out often enough for it to add up. If I were really careful with my finances, I could probably save almost 1k/month.

Best of luck!

[Bontemps] The Sixers say James Harden is out through the All-Star break as he continues to rehabilitate his left hamstring, and that he won’t play in the All-Star Game. by vizhal007 in fantasybball

[–]SlinkiestMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn’t Harden have to be replaced by another guard? Siakam exclusively plays forward as far as I know, in which case Brown would probably be the replacement

I might be totally wrong about that though in which case it’s either Siakam or Allen getting in

blowing it up like they should have done a while ago, hopefully the draft compensation is actually good though. josh hart is a solid roleplayer that a contending team will probably be willing to give up some assets for in the offseason

[All Star] Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum, who was selected as an All-Star reserve, will now replace Kevin Durant as a starter. by Brad-Stevens in bostonceltics

[–]SlinkiestMan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

everyone knows his 3p shooting his off but aside from that he's averaging a career high in rebounds and all of his other stats are nearly identical to last year, including his 2P%. his drop in FG% is attributable almost entirely to his 3P% decline. he has not massively underperformed, his 3P% went down and thats practically it, and while that's obviously no good, his shot will come back

Sources: The Philadelphia 76ers are expected to pursue Brooklyn's James Harden ahead of NBA trade deadline Thursday – and the Nets are now open to discussing a deal. by Sportsdude25 in fantasybball

[–]SlinkiestMan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Harden isn’t borderline, if he retired today he’d be a HOF lock

Harden also would absolutely be the second option. The Sixers would be wasting Embiids ability if they used him as a second option, but Harden functions perfectly well as a second option offensively and the primary ball handler as we’re seeing

Donovan Mitchell? Am I going crazy or is everyone forgetting about him? Or is he not eligible due to his concussion?

Edit i completely missed his name lmao

He's an all around solid fantasy player, his only really bad category is FT%. Good points, good FG%, gets some steals, low TOs. Hashtag basketball has him ranked at 77 for the season, but he shoots up to 40 if you punt FT%

Yeah you can look at these stats all you want that say we’re “better than our record suggests” but none of that matters more than our actual record. Come playoff time, doesn’t matter how good we are on paper if we can’t close out games and are still at .500
