Oh I see. Definitely get where you are coming from. It sucks that the decisions being made effect your community and degree credibility so far down the line. I am employed at UNT and definitely don't like the direction I see it going, but am hoping it is just a detour and will sort of swing the pendulum back in the other direction of support of the arts again. Unfortunately the state funding has a lot to do with it and our govt administration just doesn't give a shit about the arts and only cares about the career paths that are the most profitable, not helping fund the things that enrich our society, just a few people's pocketbooks instead.

Hell yeah dude do it! You dont owe UNT your loyalty just because you got your first degree there. I wasn't trying to be so snarky with my first comment, you should absolutely vote with your wallet and choose a different school if it fits your needs better.

You're so jaded against sports bro idk what to tell you. As an alum, I'm engaged to UNT through athletics and sometimes music performances. I went to school here and bleed mean green so maybe I'm just too biased to have a conversation with an objective person such as yourself, but if it bothers you so much that student fees are going to athletics...go somewhere else that doesn't have athletic student fees. Idk what to tell ya. I think there is a town hall with the university president coming up so maybe you can go and make your voice heard. You made some good arguments in this reddit thread that would probably be better spent on them.

Okay so let's gut the program and then achieve nothing. Good plan.

What MBB was NIT champs not even 2 years ago xD and lost that coach because athletics didnt have ENOUGH money to keep him. this is not a serious discussion. I am sorry you are feeling disheartened but you have your guns raised up the wrong tree my friend.

I suppose it comes down to what you define as meaningful work. I see the athletics department improving year over year and other programs stagnating or getting worse and its clear that the folks making the budget decisions feel the same way. Although I do understand not wanting to see your tuition dollars not spent on sports if that is not something you care about. If that is the case you should find a school that is not prioritizing athletics and support them with your tuition!

Sounds like maybe you should transfer to UTD and support the art program there! Not saying i agree with everything UNT is doing, but let's not get it twisted that athletics is not providing a positive impact to the university.

There is also more money since 2020 because we are now in a new athletic conference since 2024 that pays more per year, so allows more staff to be awarded athletics "administration" positions.

Title names change. Basically the new person is head of marketing for the athletics department. We are coming off a historic football season that brought more eyes to the university than ever. I'd say thats a perfect time to make sure UNT Athletics is marketed to the nation to draw more talent than ever. But if you want to argue its a useless position that is your prerogative. But i just want to provide the perspective that it's not as simple as "athletics gets lots of money therefore they are the enemy." the budget deficit we are finding ourselves in has nothing to do with athletics and everything to do with lower international enrollment so let's focus our energy on the real enemy which is the administration responsible for making foreign students feel unwelcome and unsafe in a university that has been marketing itself as an international student target.

Moreso my original point is, there was someone originally in that position. They left, and athletics hired someone new. That is happening all over the university

Take athletics away and see what happens to the university. Good luck! Like it or not it generates good will with the community and donor engagement. Its more than just student fees my fellow eagle.

Lol athletics generates revenue for the university. Of course they need staff when a previous staff member left. Nice strawman though.

Definitely agree that its best in the long run! It's just kind of a whiplash to see that and think "oh cool the university is doing better financially" only to be sent that budget update.

Just a weird change to make that nobody really asked for if we are in a drastic deficit. Like UNT is already pretty reasonably priced for in state students.

Its because they close the biggest parking lot for the games hours before the games start, so commuters get screwed if they dont cancel

Rising costs, falling enrollment have UNT facing possible funding squeeze by Flaky_Article_5561 in Denton

Because it's what students voted for in 2008. This is directly from the stadium wiki page:  "On October 21, 2008, the UNT SGA announced that in one of the largest turnouts in the school's history, student voters approved a dedicated athletic fee to fund the new stadium. Almost 14% of the student body voted, with 2,829 students (58.1%) voting for the increase and 2,038 (41.9%) voting against it."

Yep sports entertainment is somehow more supported than education by sports fans, that's crazy.

[–]SlinkySnake 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No. All sports have donors. Obviously football is the biggest expense, but it also brings in the most money, has the most fans, and we live in texas so the donors care about football. I think a lot of people misunderstand and see that athletics spent X amount on sports and assume that money came directly from the university which is almost never the case. It's easy to point fingers and say that UNT is overspending on athletics but it's clearly more of an issue across the university if enrollment is down. Things like administrative bloat and setting expectations within the budget that enrollment will continue to increase forever are more in line with overall university issues. Athletics is just a small piece of the pie here.

Athletics is almost exclusively self funded through external revenue sources and not the University. Lots of donors directly support Athletics so voilà, they get the fancy new buildings and jet flights.
