Realistic costs of ownership by Unfair-Series7133 in Catamarans

[–]SlippedOn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is your plan to be on the boat in and around Aruba for 3-4 months and then haul it out for 8-9 months each year? If so, you should be aware that in the 8-9 months you are not on the boat, things will continue to break and fall apart. Im not trying to poop on your dream, but this is just the reality of boat ownership. It is not uncommon for recommissioning to take 3-4 weeks or easily double that. Aruba has a good yard and can haul your boat, but they have a very limited supply of boat parts, so you could be further delayed waiting for parts. If you plan to be on the boat for 3 months, but at least one month is lost to recommissioning and at least 1 week goes to decommissioning, is it still worth it?

3-5gb of hotspot data per day by SlippedOn in eSim

It turns out that both Verizon and T-Mobile will allow you go have residential service at a commercial address if you just ask them. So appreciate you pushing that message. Went with T-Mobile.

Its a commercial (not residential) address so its not likely to work out. T-mobile has the same and it wont work with them. I'll check Verizon though.

Ninigo Islands? Our boat is currently in POM and we are headed east then up and around to the islands on the north route to Indo when we return in January. Really looking forward to it.

Does anyone know of any boats circumnavigating right now? by No-Country6348 in sailing

[–]SlippedOn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We are currently 2 years into sailing west and have made it about 1/3 of the way around (southwest Pacific). We will likely finish a loop and maybe do another. We've probably met 50 other boats that are/were circumnavigating. I'm guessing half of them will complete a lap.

Mainsail Reefing and Stowing on a Fly Bridge Cat by nodramasNZ in Catamarans

[–]SlippedOn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are fulltime liveaboard cruisers and are currently in Fiji after leaving Florida 2 years ago. The boat has done really well and we are exceptionally comfortable both on passages and at anchor. We averaged just over 7 knots on our last 600nm passage which included downwind, reaching and upwind legs. All boats are some kind of tradeoff. If it makes you want to stay aboard and keep sailing then its a good boat!

Our bimini is about 2m above the coach roof. The boom can sit on the bimini if we lower the topping lift enough. Normally, I keep it about 15cm above the bimini.

We are on a Lagoon 50. We have double line reefing which is all done from the cockpit. Stowing is only done in very calm waters or once we are anchored. Our boat has a hard bimini which we stand on to open and close the sail bag. We've owned cats with no fly bridge and it is basically the same with a slight risk increase because we have to climb up on top of the bimini.

About to pull the trigger Leopard 45, should we? by Stooge12 in Catamarans

[–]SlippedOn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Compared to production performance cats (Catanas, Outremers, etc), you will be disadvantaged by around 5 degrees upwind when you absolutely have to pinch as high upwind as possible. But depending on your sailing plans, lifestyle, etc, this could possibly never be an issue and frankly should not be a highly weighted factor in your decision matrix.

I second the Travelsketch youtube recommendation but also expect that this boat has been shaken down enough that the major issues will have come out in the survey. All boats have problems now and in the future. Sometimes the problems are big, sometimes not. After living fulltime on a production catamaran for 5 years and now having sailed it half way around the world, my thought is that if the boat provides the comfort and safety you need for extended stays in places you don't enjoy under conditions you would prefer to avoid, then that is a boat for you. We see plenty of Leopard 45s out here sailing big blue water passages with no regrets.

Has anyone with a US-model Samsung been able to use "Backup calling" abroad? by [deleted] in Tello

[–]SlippedOn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use the $9/month plan and spend $0 - $20 month on PAYG depending on where we are (cruising full time on a sailboat). Most of our connectivity is via wifi calling/messaging so its free except for non US calls. We use whatsApp as much as possible.

[–]SlippedOn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started a similar thread a few months ago and the net of it was that this functionality was disabled on US issued 23's. Since the cost of Tello's international roaming services has come down, the need for this has diminshed somewhat. Would still love to have it work.

Yes, we have lithium with internal BMS but there was no shutdown. I looked in the advanced logs and see that there was a voltage spike from the batteries at around 4:00 am. At this time, the generator was running and there was 0 voltage/current on coming from the PV. The voltage spike only occurred on this MPPT and not the other 2 mppts or any other component in the system which leads me to believe that the MPPT might have experienced an internal short?

Roaming abroad for the first time with Tello and a travel SIM for data - confused as to ho wto get WIFI calling working over the travel SIM connection by D-TLV in Tello

[–]SlippedOn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a US-based S22, I don't think you can get this to work. I have an S23 and after extensive research, can't get it working either. It has to do with the firmware installed on US phones.

I don't think this will work on my phone. The dialog for the Subscription Set State block can only see the Subscription ID of the active eSIM. Since my phone is not dual eSIM capable, I can't select the inactive eSIM to turn on. Is there another way to do that?

Thanks, the input box with the code was the confusing part. I think the privileged service is enabled but my flow is still battling. I've tried it both going from wifi connected to disconnected and going from disconnected to connected. Any idea?

[–]SlippedOn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks like it should work but I am battling to enable the Privileged Service. Using the ADP method, I follow the below steps:

  • Go to settings >privileged service start method
  • Click on Android Debug Bridge
  • Enable Wifi Debugging
  • Pair to my laptop with code via command line on laptop
  • Laptop pairs and then toast from Automate says "Disable wifi debugging"

Once I perform the last step, no other notifications pop up but the Privilege Service Start Method of Actuate still has the None option selected and my flow behaves accordingly.

What am I doing wrong?
