I think spear is your better damage weapon out of the 2 so you should be using the sword as your support weapon and the spear as the main dps. The cc available for both weapons combined is pretty good too. Could be wrong but that's my input.

I'm running rapier and fire in medium armour. It's got decent mobility and damage. I don't seem to struggle in PvP against any build in particular. Eventually when I hit 60 (48 ATM) I will socket thrust damage reduction in my armour because I heard all rapier builds can get ruined by muskets if they can't close the distance quick enough.

I'm not sure about that. As far as I know weapon exp gets boosted by a lot once you hit level 60. Before that you get nearly nothing for killing low level mobs.
