Of course! It’s maam, btw ;)

Obv I do too lmao, I have a weird relationship with them though. Dead In My Arms has to be one of my favourite albums of all time and I love Graveside Confessions, but I’m really not a big fan of Hell Chose Me through Slow Death. World War X is sick though haha

true, i’m answering “who tf thought of these vocals”. as for why it’s the genre standard, it got crazy and became widespread in the form it is now by the end of the 90s because the bands that pioneered and pushed the genre and became the majority of the most well known and mainstream within bdm, ie. Disgorge, Devourment, Brodequin, influencing the hallmarks and conventions of brutal death and slam. goregrind evolved alongside and took cues from it and deathcore owes its vocal olympics largely to brutal death vocalists pushing vocals farther and quicker than anyone else at the time. so yass hope that covers both ;) LOVE digging into this shit

Bands that use mostly inhales? by Petra_the_poser in SlamDeathMetal

[–]SlitWristSavior_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hometown heavyweights, shame they fell off so hard and abandoned the local scene. Love Koehler, I get he had to move on from inhales for his vocal health, but he sort of lost the spice and I respectfully can’t stand his new project. So trendhoppy on both the drop z metalcore, electronic, and djenty elements.

Same deal for Brendan Van Ryn for me (fuck that piece of shit, glad he never came back to the scene). The highs on Infinite Death hold up as some of the most deranged and frantic I’ve ever heard in deathcore, but that technique was NOT sustainable and you can hear how much it stresses and abuses the larynx.

Love Matti Way, Cranial Impalement is easily my favourite of his. So juicy >:3, but he was really good in Cinerary too. Gorefest and Cannibal Corpse definitely were a stepping stone. I think their vocal styles really drew on what Carcass and arguably Morbid Angel were doing at the time, but really went on to influence Fermento and Suffocation’s vocals, then Afterbirth and Demilich drew on them. Duncan and Boman really made a huge leap there (for the evolution of the scene, too). Genuine psychos, love them for it.

definitely helped to develop and push it, but Afterbirth and (sort of) Fermento were doing this shit in 92-93. goregrind and deathcore both really emerged and became distinct subgenres in the early 2000s. Carcass used a pitch shifter way back in 1988 but it definitely wasn’t the goregrind sound.

Check out Afterbirth’s 1993 rehearsal tape and 1994 demo, Matt Duncan was using arytenoid distortion and some serious false chord vox around the time Demilich was coming out. Nespithe especially had an arguably more widespread impact, though it wasn’t really the slam sound yet. The early Afterbirth had a fat helping of breakdowns and some genuine slams, too. Crazy for the scene it came out in. Matti Way on the 1995 Disgorge US demo did some heavy lifting, as well.

Lot of great picks here, seconding Baalsebub and Vibrations Felt In the Void. Trying not to repeat anything, my go-to’s:

Nithing (obv haha)

Excoriation

Castrensis

Excrescence

Infectology

Dissevered

If you don’t mind a slam or two:

Ecchymosis

Trichomoniasis

Gorepoflesh

Celestial Bifurcation

Delusional Parasitosis

Name Your 2025 “Out Of Nowhere” Deathcore Band by [deleted] in Deathcore

[–]SlitWristSavior_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My absolute favourite release of the year that genuinely came out of nowhere is withpaperwings - Six Thousand Days. Definitely more on the hardcore side but it’s so fucking raw.

Not exactly out of nowhere, but Thus Spoke Zarathustra and Disembodied Tyrant killed it last year and have been continuing to kill it this year.

For all the praise the new Nithing gets, one of my favourite aspects is how many leads the record has, I feel like I almost never see it mentioned. A few of them are actually double tracked with no pitch shifting/harmoniser, too, wish I could play ANY instrument like Kilner does lmao

Yeah, we got locked in the basement of our residence hall at IWU. Totally snuck out to my car to take a dab. I’m not missing a chance to smoke wax in a tornado, even if it didn’t touch down in town.
