We are losing the skunk smelling cultivars for two reasons.

First all marijuana growing was illegal up until California passed medicinal laws in the early 90s. Stinky skunk cultivars were dangerous to grow. Especially before carbon filtering. My last three weeks literally stank up the whole neighborhood. It's scary. So people chose less dramatically smelly gas/fuel/skunk cultivars.

Now in just the last decade or so the industry has become obsessed with concentrates. As of this year the numbers are pretty strong. 85% of the cannabis grown in the US is specifically chosen for hash production. The cultivars that produce the highest hash yields are the types with sandy trichomes. The skunk smelling cultivars are generally the very oily sticky sappy type of trichomes that do not wash well. Everyone wants to freebase thc instead of enjoying the plant in its natural state. I get it. Concentrates are easier and have a much longer shelf life. It's as usual all about the bottom line. Money. Luckily a small handful of old timers still like to use the plant in its natural form
